Whats reverb like on Hot Rod Deluxe?

tikitakitikitakitak - 26 Apr 2002 11:59:38

I dont wanna get a bassman and an outboard reverb cause thats alot of
money unless you go secondhand. Is reverb on Deluxe good? I've never
played one myself, so how's that amp for surf? With a jaguar.

You don't get as much tone shaping control with an
onboard reverb as you do with an outboard. Are you
talking about the reissue Deluxe? They're good amps
but IMO don't have enough juice or enough headroom to
play with a full on band.

Funny you should mention that -
I've gotta '94 Blues Deluxe (the tweed version before the 'hot rod' came out
in black) in the shop right now, and he swears he can tweak up the reverb.
we'll see.
The reverb on the blues/hot rod Deluxe is driven by a chip, not a tube. It's
a very good reverb for ambiance but no replacement for an outboard. Even
wide open its not very 'wet'.
I have no idea how the electronics compare.

I don't have a Hot Rod Deluxe, but I do have a Hot Rod DeVille, which may be
a close cousin. I don't know what the real differences are between the two.
Mine is 2x12" and 60 Watts. The reverb is probably not tube, but it is still
pretty good. I always set mine at 12 (max) before I got a reverb unit and it
sounded pretty good. But the reverb tank rules, hands down. This amp can be
very loud and clean, and it works well I think for surf. I also have a
Jaguar.
Now my brother has a Blues Deluxe, which may be closer to the Hot Rod Deluxe
(dunno for sure). Its the one with the tan tolex covering and brown grill
cloth. The reverb on that is not as strong as the Hot Rod DeVille, and it is
much noiser for some reason.
