Japanese Fender basses

scottgun00 - 28 Apr 2004 19:29:12

Hi! I've been lurker here a few days and thought I'd post my dilema.
I want a fiesta red Fender (P or J). The only one currently offered
in that color in America is the Mustang, and used P's and J's in that
color almost never show up on ebay and when they do, they are the
(imo) overpriced American reissues or actual vintage models (perhaps
they are worth it, but no way could I justify spending the $$). Once
I saw a beautiful MIJ J-bass in fiesta on ebay that went for a
reasonable $600.
Anyway, my guitarist (Ivan Pongracic) mentioned that Fenders are
still made and sold in Japan and that Americans have been able to get
them. Anyone know how? (Of course I'm banking that they have the
color.)
Thanks!
Scott

For some reason Fiesta Red isn't nearly as common on
bass' as it is on guitars, particularly Strats, and
even if you did want to spend the money to get an
American Vintage Series (or even a real vintage) P or
J, you'd still be hard-pressed to find one in Fiesta
Red, and you'd still be paying extra for it.
You can still order instruments from Ishibashi Music
out of Japan, but I'm afraid it's hard to figure out
what's what on their site since everything is in
Japanese and their seems to be a lot of garbled stuff
on there anyway. I can definitely say that the only
color red I've seen on their site is Candy Apple Red.
If you can get it, I'd buy another one and ReRanch it.

E-mail them. They might have a color that's not on the web site. That's
how I got my Sonic Blue Jazz Bass.
Paid with a credit card and got it in 7 days. Simple. My advice is to
spring for a hard case. I didn't and mine was shipped in the triangle
Fender box (with a boat load of bubble wrap, though).

hi
just for the heck of it i thought i'd take a peek at what they have
at www.musiciansfriend.com, see what colors the different models come
in, and i found this:
Standard Precision Bass $379.99 - $419.99 black, white, blue, green,
brownsunburst, midnight wine. guess thats a darker red.
fender standard jazz bass. 419 to 459.99 same colors.
$529 for mark hoppus signature bass.. 529.99 arg no red! just black,
white, blue, & "surf green". its a jazz bass with a p bass pickup.
deluxe p bass special $529.99 - $569.99 black, white, candy apple,
brown sunburst.
geddy lee bass black only. blah! :P
US highway 1 j-basses: 3 tone sunburst. (nice!) crimson red
transparent. (might be interesting if it looks like my fender
accoustic SG22 guitar's finish.) $629 though.
deluxe jazz comes in candy apple. 559
oo hey this is cool! A fender mustang bass reissue.
$489.99 FIESTA RED
"Small, lightweight, and punchy. A reissue of the '64 classic. This
is a great bass for smaller players or anyone who likes a lightweight
instrument with a short, fast neck. 30" scale length. Alder body.
Maple neck. One split single-coil pickup. Rosewood fretboard with dot
markers and nickel frets.
Features:
30" scale length
Alder body
Maple neck
Split single-coil pickup
Rosewood fretboard with dot markers and nickel frets
Get it while you can. This is a limited edition reissue."
maybe that would be something worth looking at.
otherwise, I am pretty sure the older made in japan standard basses
from the early 80s came in a red color very similar to the fiesta
red. unless the fiesta is even brighter or has bigger flakes? i am
not sure how it looks in person.
I have a bright red metalflake fender strat from 84 or 85, they were
made in japan then. I am sure the basses were probably made in the
same colors.
they had another red back then that looked like a dull rosey color..
really couldn't get a more yukky looking red i think, so watch out
not to get one of those. theyre a VERY different color. almost like
cheap nail polish sort of color.

I bet Dave Wronski from Slacktone could help you figure out
how to get Fiesta Red on a P-bass...I'm not sure , but I
think he knows a lot about Fender's Custom shop in Corona
CA....maybe he'll chime in soon.
good luck

The classic Fender Fiesta Red is a flat color, no metal flakes. It
is hard to describe, but lots of people use the "tomato soup"
analogy. It is not dark like candy apple red. Fender varied the
color over the years, and plus the color changes over time on
vintage instruments. I think fiesta red is so popular because Hank
Marvin (The Shadows) played a strat (with gold hardware?) in that
color for a time.
If you search on "fiesta red" on google you'll see lots of examples,
but keep in mind there is a bit of variety.

Brian is absolutely right about the variety of fiesta red colors.
The Shadows maniacs get really worked up over this subject. Most of
them reject that Hank's guitar WAS in fiesta red, cause he always
described it as flamingo pink (I think). More recently he says he's
been assured by many Fender people that Fender never offered a color
by that name, but yet the 'Shaddicts' continue to refer to fiesta red
as pink.
Hank had one fiesta red Strat (a '59, w/ maple fretboard and gold
hardware) from '59 until early '61 (the guitar belonged to Cliff
Richard, who took it back then - he gave it as a gift to the Shadows
rhythm guitarist Bruce Welch in the seventies, and Bruce is still
playing it - I had the honor of actually playing it last year in
Toronto - talk about shivers running down your spine!), and then all
the Shadows got a matching set of fiesta red Fenders, with chrome
hardware and rosewood fretboards which they played until mid '63.
They switched to white matching Fenders at that point, first with
white pickguards and then with tortoiseshell pickguards, until they
got their signature Burns instruments in the Spring of '64 (also
white with tortoiseshell pickguards. But most people still identify
the Shadows with the fiesta red Fenders, since during '60-'63, their
most successful period, that's what they played.
I would describe the color as red with quite a bit of orange and pink
in it. In fact, some say it's more pinkish, but I think it's more
orangish in color. Fiesta red was one of Fender's first successful
custom colors, and it wasn't just the Shadows that played them. The
most striking example in surf music was the Surfaris - both the lead
guitarist and bass player played fiesta red Fenders (Strat and P-
bass, respectively). It's a beautiful color. Incidentally, the
first '57 reissue Strat that Fender made back in '82 or so came in
fiesta red, and was given to Hank.

Thanks for the Shadows history lesson, Ivan - I have wondered how
Bruce Welch got the first Marvin strat ever since I saw a copy of the
Shadow mania show.
As a side note, when I decided to learn "Journey to the Stars" it
was your version....from the Ventures tribute album.

oh ok. hey, thats some cool trivia there!
from the picture i saw on the webpage it looked very
red looking, so i figured it might be similar to my
red. the red on my strat has sort of metal flake like
cars have i guess? its like a real candy apple red
paint job but its not that dark, its actually a very
happy looking red instead. i have an original
broshure for Fender's guitars the year i got my strat,
so i should check and see what the colors were. i
looked in my old owners manual but it didnt mention
colors, just different features. i suppose there's a
ton of books out there on them that would give all
those details too.
