Chad Cote - Apache '66 file - Cool!!

kahunatikiman - 27 Apr 2004 13:25:16

Cool to listen to your version of Apache - What kind of gear did you
use, and how did you record it? I liked the guitar tone!

I would like to second Chris on this. Very cool.
Chad, if you see this, I don't know if you remember it
or not but I sold you a Mustang bridge on eBay several
years ago. Are you still using it? Great track.

WARNING:
Big long gear-geek post, but that's okay that's what we're here for.
Nothing too scientific about how I did my version of Apache. My
version is more of a nod to the version that Los Shains, a 60's
Brazilian surf/garage combo did back in 1966, hence the title. The
backing track was a version of Apache without the lead guitar that I
found on Kazaa a couple of years back.
The lead guitar was done on my ever-trusty Fender '94 MIJ Jaguar.
Thanks to Richard the Mustang bridge has increased the playability
and the tone of my Jag alot, much better than the original bridge-
less string rattle and my low E doesn't pop out of the saddle
anymore. All the volume knobs are on high and the three side
switches are in the up position. The amp I used is my reliable 25
watt Squire Champ. (One of these days I'll invest in a Dual
Showman.) The normal volume is on 2, the mid on 5, the treble on 8,
and the bass on 6. The most important ingredient is, and if you
guess this wrong,FOR SHAME! Fender Reverb. My key ingredient is my
Re-ish '63 Fender reverb tanker with the settings 6-6-7. You can
really hear the drips when you do palm muting and you get that trad
sound that is what I was going for.
The recording process what pretty much DIY. I used the headphone
jack from my amp and used a Y connector plugging into a cassette
deck with Dolby b & c noise reduction. I set my record level and
played the leads listening to the backing track on my personal
stereo. I did the lead in 2 takes. I transfered my lead guitar track
to CD using an audio CD burner to a CD-RW. I then used the sound
editor program that came with Easy CD Creator 5 to convert the
backing track and my lead track to wav. files. I copied my lead to
the backing track by mix pasting. Once I was satisified about the
timing of lead guitar I then converted the final mix to mp3 and
there ya go!
I'm planning to re-record my lead adding some of the parts heard
after the main melody and some string sqeaks where appropriate. This
is going to be part of a personal project of mine: to have my own
surf record. I'm working on right now a version of The Island Speaks
which first appeared on the Dr.No soundtrack. The main guitar heard
there is screaming for a surf arrangement.
Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad some of you like the track. I
thought most of you were gonna go Simon on my ass! Then again we're
miles away from American Idol-our music has more integrity, moxie,
and heart!
Chad Cote
6 string surfer.
