South Bay Reunion - Halibut Rick?

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 14 Apr 2004 10:31:56

Hey Rick, while we got you here, I was just wondering if you could share
some memories of the South Bay Reunion show that was held in (I think) 1986?
The Halibuts played alongside The Belairs, Eddie & The Showmen, David Marks
& The Marksmen, and about 3 other bands that had Paul Johnson in it :).
I don't mean to put you on the spot or anything, but that must have been a
thrill...
I was one year out of high school then and pretty much oblivious to surf
music :)

I would have loved to see David Marks and the Marksmen...
what are they up to now?

Yep, 1986. That was a really incredible night. If you can find it,
there was a video tape of it with interviews of every band. I think
Paul Johnson used to have it for sale.
That's almost 20 years ago, but the thing that sticks out in my mind
most was meeting people in the crowd who were in not-so-famous south
bay surf bands who weren't represented on stage. I wish I could
remember some of the names. Since there were hardly any surf bands
around in '86, especially in the south bay, we were constantly being
thanked for keeping the music alive by everybody all night long. They
made us feel pretty special.
Some guys hadn't played in years, but I don't remember any of the bands
sounding bad. Paul was the standout, just as he usually is. If you're
from the south bay, Paul is the real king of the surf guitar. I think
all the bands had original players except I do remember Dave Marks had
someone standing in on rhythm guitar.
We closed the show playing "40 Miles of Bad Road" and I think we got
just about everybody from all the other bands up on stage to join in.
I wish I could remember more. I'd have to dig up that video.
I did go to an even cooler SB surf band reunion some years earier when
the Halibuts had just started. At that time, it was an annual event
that was held a someone's house. That was the first time I met Paul. I
was blown away at seeing all those guys play. I do remember that Eddie
Bertrand kind of cleared the room with a lot of loud distorted
psychedelic noise. It might go over a little better nowadays since
there's a lot more non-traditional bands around. BTW it was Jim Tucker
of the Crossfires/Turtles who invited me along that night.
