Anyone have any info on where this guy is today? I found online he
played in a surf themed porn a few years ago, but that is about all I
could find. Also does anyone know where I could get Eddie and The
Showmens' album for under $60.00?

Eddie showed up with the rest of the Belairs on the Rendezvous
Ballroom Reunion 2000 double CD. At least 2 list members were at the
actual show, Ivan & Dave Wronski, and I would guess a few more (Jeff
Bigtikidude??)....can you guys comment?
The CD from the show is a mixed bag, the newer groups sound and
played great, but the old school guys suffer from too much 70's
style rock stylings...lots of weedle-weedle-wee licks with semi-
distortion, etc. The Chantays in particular... The Lively Ones are
one of my favorite 1st wave bands, but they are anything but lively
on this album... a very restrained performance. For example, listen
to Goofy Foot on their Hang Five compilation, then listen to the
Reunion version. Zzzzzz...
All IMHO, of course....
I can't help you find their album (I wasn't aware they ever released
one officially, I believe they only released singles), but can
recommend the "Toes on The Nose" compilation disc. It has most of
their recorded output on it.
Best regards,
BN
Brian - Thanks
Atleast he's still alive...the album I was refering to was
called "Squad Car" and it pops up on Amazon every once inawhile. I
think it is a comp. of all their singles.
Does he still play the Jaguars?

He played a strat at the South Bay Reunion show in the mid-80's, and I think
I read on Cowabunga he was using a strat with a <gasp> humbucker in it at
the 2000 reunion show. You'd better ask the eye witnesses on the list to be
sure... :)

$22. It was worth it, though, at least for me. It has some cool
tunes, and great liner notes( for a surf CD) with some great
photos. Too bad about the performance of the" old school" guys at
the reunion show. You always want to remember guys the way they
were, young and vibrant. I saw the Fireballs two years ago, and it
was sad. They looked like an oldies act, rather than the
forefathers of surf I was looking forward to seeing. The same
night, I saw Bill Haley's Original Comets, and they were all in
their seventies ( the drummer is in his 80"s, so is Frannie Beecher,
I think), and those guys kicked ass! So....
I like all things Surf related, but a Surf porn? Was the theme
song "penetration"?

Chris,
I didn't see the Surf Porn. However Eddie and the Showmen make an
apperance. I hope they were playing instruments...I guess the
synopsis of the film said it was about a all girl surf band called
the "Surfin' Slits."
best to you and yours,

I can't seem to find my copy of the cd at the moment, But I believe
that is the same title of what I have. I also believe it to be on
the out of print AVI label(same one that put out the Rare Surf
Vol. 1-3/ Jon and the Nightriders "Fiberglass Rocket" And the
Fathoms "Fathomless" cds.)
But the "Toes on the Nose" cd only has Eddie's collected singles.
The Squad Car cd has everything he recorded, like 4 or 6 more songs
if I recall correctly.
Really a score if you can dig up a copy somehwere.

That is officially the funniest thing I have ever read
on the internet. Ever.

The "Squad Car" CD is available in the latest Norton Records
catalogue (if they still have copies).

Thanks for the tip Mike and others (Jeff, Bill). I wasn't aware of this CD!
BN
Brian,
I was at that show...and you are correct about the
UN-Lively Ones...the looked and sounded half dead. I don't
remember much about Eddie and the Showmen...they sort of
seemed to blend in with the Unlively section of the show. I
do remember the Belairs, the Space Cossacks and Dick Dale.
I thought old Paul Johnson was outstanding and sort of
subtly stole the show, and I really liked the Cossacks'
set.

"Squad Car" has 17 tracks (it's one of my most played cds).
From my understanding, Eddie makes a candid appearance in a couple
porn flicks called "Brown Eyed Blondes" (I can't say I've seen
them :-) with a all chick surf band called the Viking Surf Slits. I
assume he's in a scene playing Squad Car or Toes on the Nose. I
can't picture him in a sex scene!

I just ordered a copy on DVD for $10.88. I'll post a
review. :)
No, seriously, I figured for $10.88, with Eddie
Bertrand and Jilly Kelly content, I couldn't go too
wrong. I'll post about the surf-related content.

I actually own that DVD. You should have saved the $10.88.
Eddie is only in one scene at the end where he plays in a club. He
lip-syncs a bastardized version of Squad Car (with electronic drums!)
after which, a message appears on the screen saying how even though he
wrote Squad Car, he was cheated out of rights to it and couldn't use it
in the movie or got any of the royalties to the song and how that in
the old days, all the artists got ripped off, blah, blah, blah....
or something like that. It's been awhile since I've watched it.
I think I remember doing a review at Cowabunga years ago but I can't
seem to find it in the archives.
I'll try to extract the song and convert it to an Mp3. I'll have to do
it late at night, though...

From the end of "Jim Holliday's Brown Eyed Blondes" (1998):
"Like Little Richard, Del Shannon and dozens of early rockers, as a
teenager, Eddie Bertrand was screwed out of his writing and publishing
royalty rights by his management and record label. As a result, we
recreated (in such a way as to avoid copyright infringement) his
classic surf tune 'Mr. Rebel.' The original has been called one of the
five best ever, but Eddie still gets no royalties. Special thanks to
Eddie Bertrand for appearing in this project."
On second thought, maybe everyone should by the DVD so Eddie can get
some royalties.
Phil
BTW,
I have the song converted to MP3 but have no hosting for it. It's
1.9Meg in size.
