When I changed the pick up's on my strat, I installed by mistake 2 pick
up's
out of phase.
It sounded exactly as you described.
And yes it is a simple matter of reversing a couple of wires. But I think
it
is better to take it back to the shop and let them correct their own
mistake

Is there such a thing as "out of phase" for guitar pick-ups? Is it a
simple
matter of reversing a couple of wires?
I just got my Mosrite back from the shop where it was getting the
electronics corrected and the middle position sounds out of phase. There
is
no bottom end in the center position and it actually produces more bass
when
set to the bridge pick-up (where one would expect more treble). It also
loses more volume than I would expect in the center position. It almost
has
a phase shifter sound in the center position as a play from top strings to
bottom strings.
I know that the 2nd and 4th Strat postions are often referred to as "out
of
phase" but they really aren't and that is not the sound I'm getting on the
Mosrite anyway.

Thanks Ron,
The tech won't charge anything I expect the tech to fix it while I wait. I don't
have to leave it for another week.

Marty,
I am an electronics technician in the Navy who jams a little on the
side.. and it is very possible that the tech who did your work DID
get your stuff out of phase. Roland is absolutely correct, it is a
simple matter of hooking two wires in opposite places... wire A to
terminal B and vice versa. Hold your techs responsible, and don't
let them charge you to fix it.
If you get a pick-up wired "backwards" it actually gets the sound
signals 180 degrees out of phase with each other, and it "cancels"
the signals from the other pick-ups. The result is a sound almost
like a 'dead' or 'dying' pick-up would produce. The sound has a very
low volume and poor tone quality. In some cases it wouldn't even
exist. If the phase angle of the sound is exactly 180 out of phase,
there would be no sound, as the opposing waves would cancel each
other out completely. As the phase angle drifts one direction or the
other from 180 degrees... you get the low volume sound I previously
described.
Take your guitar back to the shop... hold them responsible... and
don't pay for the repair. They should have known better.
Good luck,
Ron
