Is there such a thing as "out of phase" for guitar pick-ups? Is it a simple
matter of reversing a couple of wires?
I just got my Mosrite back from the shop where it was getting the electronics
corrected and the middle position sounds out of phase. There is no bottom end in
the center position and it actually produces more bass when set to the bridge
pick-up (where one would expect more treble). It also loses more volume than I
would expect in the center position. It almost has a phase shifter sound in the
center position as a play from top strings to bottom strings.
I know that the 2nd and 4th Strat postions are often referred to as "out of
phase" but they really aren't and that is not the sound I'm getting on the
Mosrite anyway.

When I changed the pick up's on my strat, I installed by mistake 2 pick up's
out of phase.
It sounded exactly as you described.
And yes it is a simple matter of reversing a couple of wires. But I think it
is better to take it back to the shop and let them correct their own mistake
