string prices, was: Re: In the bowels of the ($399) beast(STRINGS)

mono_tones_1 - 02 Apr 2004 08:43:28

actually,
i just found out that the european internet store that sells the
Pyramids also does Chromes for 10 or 11 euro's a pack.... i just
never bothered to look.
So there you go, yes there is steel war between US en Europe, but it
appearantly doesn't affect the price of the strings, it's rather the
retailers margin - chromes are 15 euros a set in the store.
but hey, now we're at it, let's see, what's made in the US and
therefor cheaper and wider available? uhhh, fender gear, fender gear
and uhhh fender gear...
and what do the europeans have? Yep, Marshall and a market for
collectible egmonds and Eko's...
let us have our cheap strings, it's all we've got ...

Hi,
Indeed, it's the retailers margin.
Last time one of the local music stores had an open house day, they did
a -50% on all strings, including d'Addario flats.
Needless to say I bought a stack that day for my Jag. (got them for 8
euro a pack that day, instead of 16, where they normally sell for over
here)
The problem with "Pyramids" is a distrubution problem. For instance they
are not to be found in any Belgian music store I know of, while they are
produced in Germany. But d'Addario's are everywhere to be found....Last
week I picked up a set of "d'Addario flats" for our bass player....It
costed 50 Euro!!!! For crying out loud....While I Could of easily got
Pyramids Gold Flats for Bass for less.... if those where available....
Even the pyramids are not cheap, since most German retailers ask 8 Euro
for shipping strings....If you bother to ask they reply, well the 8 Euro
is for up to 30 Kg....As If I would order 30Kg of strings.....(I'm still
an old school guy when it comes to guitars and amps, what I can't play,
I don't buy....)
Oh, well....Why do I even bother!? I should be better of playing the
damn strings :)

Pyramid flatwound bass strings (as well as guitar strings) are
available in europe at
they have both short and long scale, one gauge only though, i think
they're about 35 euros a set.
I think guitar and bass strings is not really an issue for pyramid.
They're more in the market for classical instruments, at least that's
the impression I got from what they answered on e-mails: they don't
seem to give a toss about distrubiting guitar strings.
I know a dutch e-retailer is working on getting Pyramids in his
programm, but this is very preliminary.

Back in the day's, when animals still could talk, Pyramid strings were
easily available, but were considered as very uncool. As a matter of fact
there was not much choice, it was Pyramid or Piccatto. The public wanted d
Addario, they got d'Addario.
