All you guys who use d'addario and fender flats should really try
pyramid gold flatwounds. I'm trying my first set and they have been
on my Jazzmaster for 7 weeks. By this time I would have used 2 sets
of d'addarios. Another nice bit about the pyramids is that they are
actually pure nickel strings just like they were in the '60s, also
they don't wear down your frets as much. When I went from the
d'addario flats to the pyramids I noticed the pyramids had less
tension, and I actually backed off the truss rod adjustment.

Just like the Kami Kazi class student said to his instructor, I have to say,
"Are you out of your fricking mind!!"
$23.50 for a set of guitar strings?!! Yes, I know they are pure nickel. Yes I
know you say they last longer. But I get very good life out of my D'Addario's.
I use clean hands and Finger-ease regularly which reduces friction thus keeping
the strings purdy clean. So the story is that Pyramid strings are made the way
guitar strings used to be made. I've heard old records made on Jazzmasters and
I've heard new records made on Jazzmasters and I don't hear a world of
difference. Many of the new guitar tones are as good and better than the old
guitar tones and I don't beleive everyone is using Pyramid strings on the new
records
At 23.50 a set, I would be so paranoid about breaking a string,

It is the other way round. Why are Piramyds expensive in the US?
Politics and economics
It's European steel and there are heavy taxes on foreign steel in the US.

nickel. Yes I know you say they last longer. But I get very good life
out of my D'Addario's. I use clean hands and Finger-ease regularly
which reduces friction thus keeping the strings purdy clean. So the
story is that Pyramid strings are made the way guitar strings used to
be made. I've heard old records made on Jazzmasters and I've heard
new records made on Jazzmasters and I don't hear a world of
difference. Many of the new guitar tones are as good and better than
the old guitar tones and I don't beleive everyone is using Pyramid
strings on the new records

I have been searching hard for heavy gauge flat wounds for my upcoming
guitar, and I was too shocked by the Pyramid orices. I don't think the
difference in tone is worth it for US buyers. Of course, in Europe I would
have done the same as you guys and bought the Pyramids.
Back in Israel I switched to 13-56 D'Addario's roundwounds (of course, I
had to import them from the US, nobody plays heavy gauge there), and was
very pleased with them, regarding tone and string life.
I'm supposed to be picking up my new MIA Jazzmaster tomorrow, which should
be set up with 65-15 flat wounds (it'll be tuned down to D, so I needed a
heavier set), I'll report the results.
BTW - I have been really enjoying the ongoing thread about the CIJ guitars.
I chose to bite the bullet and get the American one, after I did a side by
side comparison. Of course, at $399, I think the CIJ is a great deal. If I
had the extra money I might have bought that additionaly.
The thing is, I always dreamed about a Jazzmaster, and the CIJ just did not
feel right (I checked 3 or 4 in the different stores), compared to the MIA,
and to a few Vintage ones I played.
Thanks for the reports everyone, keep em coming!

The Pyramids should last 2-3 times longer than the D'addarios. This
will make up the price difference! Plus your guitar is going to
sound better! I used to use D'addarios, I'll admit my spare set is
D'addarios, but those strings BLOW! They are too thick and they have
too much tension, and again they will wear down your frets faster.
Finger-ease is something you do not want to use, I have been told by
many techs that they HATE doing fret work on guitars that have been
sprayed with that stuff. It gunks up under frets and makes it tough
to pull them off...I used it all the time on my Rickenbacker and I
had a tech tell me he would not touch that guitar.
If you get Pyramids wipe them down when you finish playing and rub
lighter fluid onto them once a week.

Ran,
You chose to bite the bullet and buy the American Jazzmaster? For
the reasons why you did not buy the CIJ you should try the Pyramids
instead of the D'addarios. I'm using a CIJ Jazzmaster and I think
that guitar is too good for D'addarios...I would atleast try the
Thomastik Infeld Nickel Flats on your AV Jazzmaster. Those are
inbetween as far as price goes of the the D'addarios and Pyramids.
One more thing if you guys prematurely break a Pyramid it will be
replaced for free.

Bill

This
I use D'addarios for 3-4 months at a time. And my Fender flats have
been on my other guitar for about 5. I don't want to spend 5 bucks
for another set of Fenders or 7 for chromes. I have never broken one.
I actually prefer the sound of broken in strings.
> It's European steel and there are heavy taxes on foreign steel in the US.
But they're nickel.

Bill,
I actually chose the D'addarios becasue they were the only ones I found
on-line at that size (65-15). As a side note, I was looking for other
brands and noticed the high prices. The thing is, I couldn't find another
brand in that size. I might experiment later with Pyramids or TI, after I
get the feel for guitar with those strings.
If I was playing in standard tuning it certainly would have left me more
options open. Thanks for the advice (in this and your other post).

Respectfully , Bill,
That's a load-a-bull! I've been using Finger-ease since the early 70's and I've
never heard a guitar tech complain about gunk building up under frets making
them hard to remove. If you have a tech telling you that, get a new tech.
Tall tales like this make me believe that your glowing praise of Pyramid strings
is a bit overstated. Never-the-less, if I find a set at a resonable price, I
will try them and give my honest review.
I have had no problem with the longevity of D'Addarios, or even Ernie Balls or
Fender strings for that matter.

I'ts the wrap that's nickel. And it envolves other metals too.
I still think this is the main reason why the price is more than double.

Marty,
I got my information on finger-ease from a respected luthier over at
the rickenbacker forum awhile back...
"Silicone should NOT be used on any neck , by any maker, with or
without finish ,that has small or large frets , any year ,or any time
of day ! PERIOD!
Silicone never goes away ......period .
Why should you not use this 'on a guitar'?
Silicone permeates the finish and causes future problems with
adhesion .It soaks around frets and enters the fretboard , expansion
and contraction, trussrod adjustments and playing cause the silicone
to work it's way into the wood .It causes loose frets, it causes a re-
fret to not work ! I have fought silicone re-frets where the frets
just did not want to seat them selves and kept popping up! Why ?
Silicone is slippery and it never goes away!
FINGER-EASE IS EVIL!!!!! Period ."
As far as the "glowing praise" about the Pyramids...they are damn
good strings and someone asked for advice, it's your loss for not
trying them. As I stated in the earlier tone thread I consider myself
a student of all things guitar and would rather try stuff out instead
of writting it off as "bull." Sure 99.9% of this tone talk flies out
the window in a live situation but it's fun to discus.
Do you use roundwound or flatwound strings? I ask because you said
you had no trouble getting decent life out of Ernie Ball strings. If
these are indeed flats I was unaware they made them...I'll have to
try them if they do. If you don't like flats, then ignore all my
Pyramid recommendations.

Hey Bill,
I'm not writing off Pyramids completely. I'm sure they are a fine string. And,
as I stated at the end of my post, I still intend to try them.
The point is, I am compelled to take such glowing praise of the strings with a
grain of salt if that praise is accompanied by a fable such as the Finger-ease
story from the "well respected" Rick luthier.
In addition, statements such as "(D'Addarios) are too thick and they have too
much tension..." lead me to take the recommendation of Pyramids with another
grain of salt. D'Addarios are only as thick as the gage that you select. The
tension, within humanly detectable limits, is the same as the tension of a
Pyramid string of the same gage tuned to the same frequency.

Marty,
I got my information finger-ease from a respected Rickenbacker
luthier on the voxtalks.com a few years back. There is another
product called fastfret as well which I've heard is not good for the
frets. What it does if over sprayed on the fretboard it saturates
and gets under the frets making it harder to pull them off.
As for the "tall tales" on the Pyramids it's your loss until you try
them. As I stated in the tone thread I like to try things out with
my rig, instead of writting them off as "bull." Do you use
roundwound or flatwound strings? You said you had no trouble with
the longevity of Ernie Balls, I thought I had tried every flatwound
brand out there. If you don't like flatwound strings then I take
back my Pyramid recommendation.
Regards,
Bill

Yo Bill,
When I spoke of longevity, I wasn't implying that Ernie Ball made flat wounds. I
was saying that I haven't had longevity problems with most guitar strings and I
suspect that part of that is due to the use of Finger-ease and clean hands.
I like both flat-wound and round wound strings. On a Tele I like light-gaged
round wounds. I have Strats strung with 13 - 56, one with flats and one with
roundwounds. For Jazzmasters, I like 11 flats.
