I just received my CIJ Jazzmaster today.
My U.S. '62 RI has much better pick-ups in terms of tone and volume.
The U.S. has a green tinted pickguard and aged looking knobs. The CIJ has bright
white plastics.
The CIJ's vibrato bar fits more snugly and stays put in various positions.
Overall quality is nice on the CIJ except for the previously mentioned pick-ups.
The CIJ is set up with round-wound 10's. It will take some truss-rod work to get
it set pu for heavier gage falt wound strings.

Ok, other than the pickups, how does she play? How different is the
feel between the AV & the CIJ?

The necks are very similar between the U.S. and CIJ. I imagine I'll feel a
difference after playing the Japanese one more. They set up the action purdy low
with the 10's. I haven't been able to get the strings so pop out of the bridge
yet but I will be putting on a buzz-stop anyway along with heavier strings.
There isn't much buzz right now but I want the better sustain provided by the
buzz stop and the assurance that the strings won't leave the saddles.
I think the guitar is very worthwhile 699, especially for anyone who doesn't
have a Jazzmaster, and it's a steal at 399.

Phil,
The CIJS have fatter necks...atleast the ones I've played. Most of
the US AVs in my opinion have thinner necks. All of the early 60s
Jazzmasters I have played had beefier necks like the CIJs.

Yes,
I can now confirm that the CIJ neck is a bit fatter than the U.S. '62 RI neck.
It's not the beatufill hand filling boat-shaped log that the '52 Tele reissue is
but it is a bit thicker. The CIJ Jazzmaster is a also a bit lighter in weight
than the U.S. version.

What kind of truss-rod work does the guitar require for heavier gage strings?

Because heavier gage strings increase the pull on the top of the neck creating a
more pronounced bow, the truss rod must be tightened to counteract the pull and
result in less of a bow. The truss rod does this by pulling on the back of the
neck. This brings the action back to where it was with the lighter gage
strings.
