Do these JM's have the crappy jap strat-under-jazz cover pickups, or a big
fat JM pickup in them? Do they SOUND like a Jazzmaster, or a bad strat?
The scuttlebutt is that these are the deep-bobbin Jap pickups, not the
wide-bobbin American reissue types. In fact, these are exactly the same
as the JMs and Jags meant to sell in Japan, with the alder bodies, etc.
I played one of these "Crafted in Japan" Jags at the local guitar shop,
it played really nice but was a bit more twangy with less balanced and
harmonically nuanced than the American reissue (I can't comment on the
vintage JMs, as I haven't owned or played one). Closer to a Jag than a
Strat, IMHO. But it had really light-gage strings, like 9s, and I think
some heavier strings might help give more ccolor and depth to the tone.
Still, a nice sounding and playing guitar, especially for the price
(always that caveat). The one I played was well set-up, as this was a
serious player's shop and they set up each guitar when it comes in.
I've heard the set ups on mail-order guitars leaves much to be desired.

Robb,
Have you actually such a thing as the strat coil under the Jazzmaster pick-up
cover?

Marty - yes, I have. I had a year-unknown jap Jazzmaster (cant remember if
it was M or C IJ) and when I removed the pickup covers, instead of finding
the large rectangular bobbin I found what was basically a strat pickup
looking very lonely under that big cover. It sounded very imitation-strat
like, not full bodied and warm like a JM.
