Re Re: bass players? amp question

Mike Gottlieb (mgb76guy) - 23 Mar 2004 17:50:00

As a former bass player who played surf, garage and punk a billy as well as
some alternative mayhem that I would rather forget about. I hope I can help
with my opinion. I always played a Fender Telecaster Bass regardless of the
amps which were many in search of the "TONE". I really loved playing thru a
1965 Bassman with the piggyback 2x12 Cabinet. It sounded awesome, with an
unlimited speaker budget I would have played it forever. I blew speakers all
the time. Good thing I also got as part of the bassman deal 2 4x12 cabinets
as back ups. I later switched to a 2x15 D140f cabinet non fender cabinet
but fender where it counted. That sounded bigger but not as smooth as the
2x12 , not complaining about it but if I had to pick it would have been the
2x12s. Also I found a 1970's Sunn Collesium Bass Head all solid state 300w
that was pretty nice and really pushed the air. It was the bass amp on some
of the dictators records and I think it was on the cover of some band named
Kyuss's album. Pretty nice tone as well I was real happy with it and felt
more comfortable gigging with it instead of the aging fender. As part of a
trade I aquired a Vox bastard amp that had 2 knobs on it Volume and Tone X.
Tone X changed the tone from not really clean to downright obnoxious, it was
a home made cabinet with a noname15 and a Vox bulldog 12 inch speaker. It
was a real love it or hate it amp and I loved it as gross as it was. For the
life of me I can't remember what the name on the vox was. I was willing to
try anything except a Peavey to work on the sound. Maybe its just the logo,
but as we used to say "If we see a peavey amp on stage the band was tainted
and had the peavey Karma." Well Going with a Fender is never a bad Plan as
if you find for some reason you don't like it you can always turn it around
pretty quick. As a option I have a Buddy who runs a Gailein "Freddy" Kreuger
with a real early Bandmaster as a preamp/tone maker and folks are blown away
with what they think is just a little old bandmaster making his guitar
players showman's and dual Showman's scream for mercy. Go figure.
Finding the tone is a lot of fun.
Enjoy

Does anyone play a Showman/Dual Showman as a bass rig?
I think Nebula Eric (err... Frodo) plays one through a non-Showman cabinet
of some kind...
When the Mrs. plugs into my Dual Showman I think it sounds awesome...but I'm
not sure she likes it over the 40 Watt Peavey guitar amp (with 1x12") I've
had since the early 1980's!
