Cyclone II

-=Brad Davis=- (tammibrad) - 17 Mar 2004 09:01:55

Richard,
Are you happy with this guitar now? I remember you having some woes with it
when you first got it. I've been considering one.
Thanks,
-Brad

$500 on Music123.com
Aren't these deals limited to quantity? I seem to
remember seeing somewhere that once these things run
out that'll be the end of it. I posted on one of
these earlier and was pretty impressed by it. I play
a Mexican Cyclone II, and it sounds great since it
comes loaded with the AV Jaguar pickups, but I've been
itching for one ever since playing one.

Hey Brad, overall, I gotta say I'm pretty darn happy
with it. At $529.99 new, it'll run you a little more
than the current deal on the MIJ Jags and JM's, but
Cyclone II's don't fetch that much on the used market.
I paid just $300.00 (an outstanding deal because an
acquaintance needed rent money) for mine and it was
still so fresh I couldn't tell it'd ever been played.
The issues that I had were with the high strings
binding at the nut (only happened on the high strings
for some reason). I had gone from 9's to a set of
D'Addario flatwound 11's on it without shaving or
lubing the nut at all, so when I'd work the trem those
strings tended to stick and go out of tune fairly
quickly. I actually resolved that just by using some
Goldcup oil, but I remember Mr. Wronski mentioning a
product that I think was called "Nutsauce"? I could
be remembering wrong, but it was something along those
lines.
But anyway, I'd say that the Cyclone II is pound for
pound a very good deal on a surf guitar without
breaking the bank. It's part of Fenders "Deluxe"
standard line made in Mexico, so all the hardware and
stuff is Mexican (it stays in tune just as well as my
stock MIJ Jagmaster does), but the pups are American
Vintage Series Jaguar pickups. I confirmed this with
a Fender employee on The Fender Forum before I bought
the guitar. Once I loaded it with the flatwounds and
plugged it into a decent sized amp I was very
pleasantly surprised. I've always toyed with the idea
of getting rid of it to get something else, but that's
really only because I'm a compulsive gear fetishist.
I guess it depends on how much you want to spend, and
what you think you'd want to upgrade afterward. I'm
pretty pleased with mine stock.
Richard
