psychoseeds - 26 Feb 2004 17:35:33

Hello, does anyone know how to get that thick Hendrix Fuzz? Like on 1st
album? I just got a Big Muff pi... Although it sounds great, it's too
Fuzzy, and not as Thick as Jimi Hendrix 1st and 2nd albums. anyone know
a Thick Hendrix guitar pedal? Thanks Jason

You can try a Dallas Arbiter or a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face. Jimi used a
Dallas Arbiter Fuzz face. If it has germanium transistors, try putting it in
the freezer for a
while before using it. Cesar Diaz (SRV's tech) also mentioned that the lower
resistance (weaker) pickups of the 60s worked better with these gain-boosting
efffects.
Fwiw.

Mike

Do the newer fuzz-faces (about '97 I think) have germanium
transistors? If so, how long will leaving it in the freezer enhance
the sound? I never considered keeping my fuzz-face next to the frozen
fish.

Hi Jason,
for what it's worth, I've been looking for a fuzz for a while and did
quite some searching on the net.
My advice is: check out the fulltone.com page, it has soundsamples of
all their pedals, which give a really good indiocation of different
fuzz sounds.
fuzzwise, they have "fulltone '69" pedal, and Soul Bender, sounds
like a hotrodded '69 to my ears. These both have pretty much that old
Hendrix sound.
then there is the Fulltone '70 fuzzpedal, for the later Hendrixfuzz
sound. if this is the sound you're after, there's plenty of others
that do the same thing just a good for way less bucks.
Here is where I am at now: Not one pedal of which i have found a
soundsample, boutique or otherwise - has that old Hendrix sound, no
matter what they claim. and I listened too a lot. So I decided to go
for the (quite expensive) fulltone pedal. Esp. the 69 is well
available on Ebay, btw.
From what I read on the net, the new fuzzfaces are not that good and
definitly do not give 'old' Hendrix sound. Hendrix had his fuzzfaces
modded, so even then his sound wasn't 'the' fuzztone sound
appearantly.
... but this is all www-info, so i dont know how reliable it is. do
your own searching', and your own deciding.
have a good fuzz-hunting!

I don't know about the 97s..but the new (Dunlop) ones do.
Not sure of freezer time. Wannes mentioned tonequest.com
There is a link to an interview they conducted in August 2001
with the late Cesar Diaz at the bottom of the page in which he mentions
the freezer trick.
Best regards,
Mike

Keep in mind that on the first two albums, Hendrix used units custom
made for him by Roger Meyer, although he used the fuzz face live.
The modern dallas arbiter made fuzz faces have germanium transistors,
not sure about the dunlop version. I think it's safe to say Hendrix
didn't keep his next to the ice cube
tray!.

I used to have a Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz, which didn’t
have a germanium transistor, the main reason I
switched to the JEN fuzz in time for the second Looney
Tunes album.
