hey guys, i just joined this group. i've been playing guitar for
about 6 years now, and i just recently begun to get into surf rock.
i've learned the basic stuff, "wipeout" and i'm working on
getting "miserlou" down good. but i was just wondering what would be
some good surf songs to build my chops on, cause i really wanna
start a surf band. currently i'm in a punk band, and i play bass,
but i wanna go ahead and start the surf rock group. and what would
be some good gear? i've already decided to go ahead and invest in
a '62 jag. re-issue. well thanks for the help guys.
Sk8ter:
try:
Pipeline by the Chantays
Hawaii 5-0 by the Ventures
Miserlou by Dick Dale
Walk-Don't Run by the Ventures
good luck

I've been working on the Duo-Tones' (Paul Johnson and Gil Orr)
version of Dick Dale's "The Wedge". I'm really hooked on it.

Take a look at the "file section" for some surf standards, both "old
school" and Third Wave. It's wide-open from there ? although I am
learning mostly 60s-era surf tunes, my personal goal is to create a
band with the psychedelic approach of The Mermen. Slacktone is another
good band. Get your hands on all the different surf music you can find
(check out Phil Dirt's web site for suggested bands), check out the
music of the guys on this site - there are some great traditional and
non-trad surf players who frequent Surf Guitar 101.
As for gear, there's hundreds of opinions on this site. Most guys
favor Fender gear of the proper vintage (early 60s Showman & Dual
Showman amps, Fender Twins, Fender Supers), either vintage or reissue.
Ditto for guitars ? lots of players choose Strats, Jags, or
Jazzmasters. But there's also strong opinions in favor of other axes:
diPintos, Mustangs, Danelectros and Reverends, Mosrites, and more.
Basically, the players seem to favor single-coils, but who is to say
you can't surf rock out with a Gretsch or a Les Paul? (Having a good
tremelo helps...)
Finally, reverb, the Holy Grail of the surf sound. Again, Fender rules
here. Most guys (and I say guys, 'cause I don't think a single woman
lurks here, as much as we'd all like that). If you can afford it, the
Fender '62 Reissue or an original Fender tube reverb box is the
ticket. Premier also made a good reverb box, the Model 90. But you
take your chances...about 1 in 3 has real issues. Or, you can try
pedals (see previous posts for opinions on these).
Best wishes, amigo. Welcome to Surf Guitar 101.
Gavin "Windansea Beach Boy."
I'd say,
- start with non-trempickers with just a doublepicked glissando (eg
pipeline)
- then move on to a trempicked song just using the both E-strings for
melody (like miserlou, there are others, just cant think of 'em right
now')
- then move on to trempicked song that goes all over the strings
(like bambi molestors Intensity)
- and then go for switching between fast melodies and all over the
fretboard doublepicks (like the wedge, though i 'tabbed' Slacktones
version and then never paid much attention to what others play on hat
song.)
anyway, that way you have a nice gradual way to build up trem
technique...
good luck with your surfband, keep us posted. btw, check out New
Yorks "the mofos". saw them last week, to be honest I didn't really
care for it, but it is halfway punk and surf so maybe it's something
for you.
