Hi Brad,
My teacher told me the technique you use, some wrist and arm. Works also
best for me.
I also have the same problem as you have. I'm also left handed, but
play guitar right handed. When I start taking leassons, my teacher said
my playing technique was fine, but, my rythem sucked....so I'm spending
the last few months learning a lot of rythem techniques. My teacher also
said I should try to play the drums, to get the rythem right. Well, I'm
finely starting to get the rythem and the up-down strokes right.
As for the most challenging technique, trem picking isn't for me (well,
not anymore :), I have more problems with proper glissando's due to
their rythtmical aspect. But starting slowly and gradually building up
the speed seams to help. I also find the different chords and chord
settings in Surf music quiet difficult to get right.
I'm currently studying "The Astronauts" and their rythmical aproach,
pretty difficult to get right. The seam to have some sort of floating
rythmical approach, which I quiet like. Also the Belairs used this
technique due to the fact that non of them had a bass player.

My teacher used to preach 'use only your wrist', but for me, using the
wrist
+ some arm works best for tremolo picking..not that I'm great at it..my
right hand has always been my weakest link..probably 'cause I'm a lefty
playing right-hand guitar.but my teacher is too and he's a tremolo
monster so its probably just a question of practice.
Anyway, it seems like there's no overall consensus as to the 'proper'
way to tremolo pick..I guess its based on individual preference, i.e.,
what works for you.
I like to hear what everyone has to say on this as, to me, this is the
most recognizable, definitive (and challenging) technique in playing
surf guitar.
