Re: PRACTICE PAIN and RSI

Brock From The Grave (count_brockula) - 24 Feb 2004 19:30:29

I don't know who the idiot was that said this kind of pain was expected. And
yes, I do think you're an idiot. It's people like you that lead people to
permanent injury. I had a teacher who said this was all normal and to be
expected and now I can only play guitar for very limited periods of time
because of permanent damage to tendon sheaths in my forearm and hand.If
you're getting this kind of pain put the guitar down for at least a week and
take some anti-inflammatories and ice and heat the area AND SEE A DOCTOR!!!
If you want to continue playing that is...

That was all very tongue-in-cheek. He didn't mean for
it to be taken seriously.

Thanks Richard.
I think two things can be said: learning any technique involves many,
many hours of practice. You can't crunch it all into two or three or
five marathon sessions. The idea of "no pain, no gain," probably
shouldn't be applied to learning a musical instrument!
When I said I've played Misirlou 6,000 times, that was probably not an
exaggeration. But I did that by practicing it almost every day as part
of my warm-up routine ? it's the song that helped me master tremelo
picking. I highly recommend it!
Gavin
P.S. We should all be a little more careful about calling one another
names. People should feel free to express themselves without being
slammed.

Sorry my question led to some toes getting steped on ;-) Thanks for
the suggestions. I tried using my whole arm instead of wrist, and it
does seem to make a big difference.

My teacher used to preach 'use only your wrist', but for me, using the wrist
+ some arm works best for tremolo picking..not that I'm great at it..my
right hand has always been my weakest link..probably 'cause I'm a lefty
playing right-hand guitar.but my teacher is too and he's a tremolo monster
so its probably just a question of practice.
Anyway, it seems like there's no overall consensus as to the 'proper' way to
tremolo pick..I guess its based on individual preference, i.e., what works
for you.
I like to hear what everyone has to say on this as, to me, this is the most
recognizable, definitive (and challenging) technique in playing surf guitar.
