Hi Alex,
Welcom to the group.
The Jazzmaster sound was discussed here before. So you might want to
check the archive about this.
As far as I read those this is what I recall;
The "Di Pinto Galaxay" as used by Los straightjackets is a pretty good
guitar that nails the Jazzmaster tone somewhat.
Also Don Wilson from (The Ventures) and his son released a guitar line
called "Wilson" these are Japanese made guitars (former Aria?)
And the come very close to the Jazzmaster tone, feel and sound.
But you might try to search for a second hand MIJ or CIJ Jazzmaster,
very fine Japanese Fenders, PU's could be better, but you could easily
upgrade at a later stage (Fender has AV RI pups and Seymour duncan has
five different Jazzmaster replacement sets available at several
different prices)
Al the above described guitars are still around $400 to ???
As for cheaper guitars, some EKO's (Italian guitars from the 60ties and
70ties) resemble the likenes of the Jazzmaster.
I recently restored a EKO "Manta" for someone and it sounded very nice,
something between a Jazzmaster and a Jaguar., the body and neck shape
ware clearly modeled after the Fenders.
Monotones recently added JM pick ups to a squier Strat he had, and it
also sounds not bad (to his description) although you should replace the
250K pots with 1Meg pots after adding JM pups.
Also the Squier Jagmaster comes close to a Jazzmaster, the newer CHINA
made JagMaster has a JM neck and body. It's a hotrodded Jazzmaster, but
could easily turned into a somewhat JM setup. These guitars can be found
new arround $ 200-250.
The now defunct Vista Series Jagmaster is also a killer guitar, a Jaguar
neck with JM body, vintage type strat trem and humbuckers, Made in Japan
and just as good as your average MIJ/CIJ Jaguar or Jazzmaster.
Hope this helps,
Jerry S.

Hi ALex,
it's true i installed jm pups in stratbody, it works somewhat.
however, most important downside is you'd have to reroute the body
and get a new blank scratchplate and route it yourself.
If i where you, i'd expiriment with strat pup upgrade, I'm very
pleased with SD SSL-1's.
one little and very cheap trick is to expiriment with pup height:
lowering the pups will give you a more mellow tone, if that's what
you're after. try it out, it's a 20 second reversable 'mod'... for
free! ;-)

There really is no substitute for a Fender Jag or
Jazzmaster or Strat, imho...but, here are a few lo-budget
suggestions...
1. Danelectro Hodad
2. Vox Phantom or Bulldog
3. Yamaha SGV
4. Any old "Teisco" Japanese-style copy guitar
5. Old Craftsman electric
6. Peavey T-60
7. Hagstrom electric
8. Framus electric
9. Mosrite-style copy
10. Epiphone Corona (70s epiphone)
good luck,
dp
