Whats a good bass and amp for surf? Been lookin at Ebay but don't
really know one bass from another. Any sage advice would be
appreciated.
My advice on bass' and amps isn't exactly "sage" but
I've been playing bass for a few years. Loosely
speaking, pretty much any passive bass will do and
most amps have enough options on them so that you can
dial in something suitably "vintage"-sounding. The
same general rules that apply to guitar also apply to
bass. Tubes are best, flatwound strings are a big
part of it too. I don't know what the other bass
players on here use, but I use a "Medium-Large" set of
Labella flatwounds.
If you're on a budget, the Danelectro reissues would
be good, especially the Longhorn. Longhorns have what
I would describe as a "hollow", boomy sound that
sounds really good. Any Fender Precision or Jazz bass
is ideal, but any decent knock-off will also work. If
you can find an old Fender Bassman 100 head, that'll
give you a nice, vintage bass sound, but tube amps are
expensive and heavy. There was a '70's Fender Bassman
100 head/four-speaker cab combo for sale for $700 at a
local music place here that went kind of quickly, I'm
kind of kicking myself for not buying it when I could
have. IMO the best medium-sized combo you can get for
great vintage bass tone is the Ampeg B100R combo. I
think they're around $500. I gig with mine and don't
have any problems filling a medium-sized bar.

You can't beat a Danelectro Longhorn in my humble opinion, or any of
the original Dano's and the re-issues.
Mike
Well, Both posts so far on this I will mostly have to
agree with. If you want my humble opinion, which is
slightly bias, I play through a 64' Dual Showman
Blackface w/2 15" Cab. The Fender p-bass and
Jazz-bass's are both great for surf and sound awesome
through a vintage Fender Tube amp. I currently play
with a fender mustang bass and I have a fender
muscimaster as well, both are 3/4 scale so I dont look
funny on stage with a fullsize bass. (Note to list, I
am short). Anyways, I have owned many p-bass', jazz
bass's and p-bass deluxe's to know they sound good and
you can usually get a mexi made one for under $400 new
or go with jap made one. I hope this helps in your
quest.

I always assumed that looking funny on-stage was an
asset...

Old Ampeg scroll top basses are kind of cool...
but they will definately make you look funny onstage...
but, remember, John Entwistle (the Who) was king of bass
and he was surely the funniest looking dude ever.
