Well so much for my last message being off-list....<red face>
However, the content was suitable for everyone I guess.
So to all:
How long have you been playing?
What instrument(s) do you play?
What got you into surf?

Been playing about 25 years.
Play guitar, bass, some keys.
Dave Mangiante of The Woodies got me started and listening to Phil
Dirts show (KFJC.)
These days I'm playing mainly solo acoustic,Hawaiian slack key and
other finger style stuff.
Want to start playing and recording surf again this summer, have not
done it for some time.

Hi Brain,
O.K., I dig in :-)
I been (trying to play) guitar since I was seventeen, so some thirteen
years ago. I stopped playing for about two years after the band I was in
at the time broke up. I also had played three years Bass in that band
(some Punk-rawk type music, nothing fancy, only ryhtem guitar) Three
years ago I started playing again with the bass player of my fomer band,
we started rehearsing with a newby drummer which went nowhere. After the
bass player switched to drums and the newby drummer to bass we got off.
Since we still had no vocalist, we started playing Man or Astro man
covers (thanks Brain for your fantastic MOAM tab site, it really got us
started) and slightly evolved to surf. The Surf thing worked, after our
first gig we were asked to play at several other parties and venues and
even got payed for them. We recruted a second guitarist and play in a
"four-piece" setting since. At the moment we are recording some material
for a demo at a studio, a very intersting expierience for us. (so far
it's been great, Surf bands are better cared for then rock bands, and
most people like Surf music and it's better suited for parties, IMHO)
O.K. I admit it, I really wanted a Jazzmaster and a Jaguar....and what
better music then Surf brings out the best in these guitars?

Okay then, here we go,
been playing for some 16 years (30 yrs old now) ... started out at
the local music school on an Aria nylon string accoustic... really
have to thank my teacher at the time Frank Gerritsen (no no no,
another Frank Gerritsen from Holland, can you imagine) who was a
brilliant player, and a brilliant teacher. he saw quickly that the
average starter lessons were not for me, and got me started on blues.
i had lessons from him for 4 years, mostly classical style technique
and fingerpicking, and gave me the best basis i could wish.
after two years or so switched to steel string first, and then
electric. first band when i was 17 (new wave, indy sorta thing ),
then started a 60's style garage rock band at 21... got some local
fame as well, it was fun but nothng spectacular.
along the way i tought myself bass (duh) mediocre drumming (when i
made demo's) and some piano (just cause we have one and my wife
plays) ...
The Apemen got me into surf... they are from around were i live, and
i saw them regularly here, in the same places were we used to play
with the garage rock band...

I've been playing since 1996(I was 23.) I finally got a decent job
and was able to afford to buy a guitar.
> What instrument(s) do you play?
I play mostly guitar but I wanna get a bass (sumthin' brand X), I
also like to fool around on pianos and organs.
> What got you into surf?
I always dug instro stuff but I didn't get into Surf until late '94
when that movie by Quentin Tarantino came out. As soon as I heard
Miserlou, it wuz Mr.Toad finding the motor car, I knew I hadda learn
how to play guitar.
I still wanna form a 5 or 6 piece Surf band but Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada ain't a Surf town. We used to have a couple of Surf bands but
it's mostly a Pop Punk/all ages show type of crowd. My town needs a
traditional Surf band! If there's anyone from Ontario that wants to
do this, e-mail me off list.

I learned wipeout in about 1980 or so. Played it on my jazzmaster.
Been twangin' with the reverb ever since. I played bass in most of my
bands but I always switched off to guitar when we did a little surf
medley aka walk don't run/pipeline/wipeout and Secret Agent Man!

Can I answer even if I barely ever post here? ;)
> How long have you been playing?
Too long for as good as I'm not! Before high school, and I'm 32
now. Stopped guitar for a few years, and did synth and bass stuff
with a band called Ibopa. Just recently climbed back onto guitar.
> What instrument(s) do you play?
Just got me a 7-string guitar. Diggin' it. It seems so natural for
surf/rockabilly/twangy stuff. Surprised it took Limp Bizkit to make
it catch on!
> What got you into surf?
Don't really know, actually. Never really thought about it! Maybe
it was when I was a kid and found my late dad's records. Wild
Angels was, well, wild! Interesting stuff for a kid in the early
eighties to hear, I think.

How long have you been playing? 24 years
What instrument(s) do you play? guitar, drums, vocals, I'm a worshiper!
What got you into surf? Hearing an old Challengers LP as a kid, fell in
love with PJ, Eddie, DD, and because I couldn't stand the Beatles!

I have enjoyed reading other peoples answers to these questions, so
here's my story...
> > How long have you been playing?
I am 34 now. I started playing guitar in the late 80's, I have
always had guitars around, but I really started trying to learn
something about 6 years ago.
> > What instrument(s) do you play?
I play guitar, mostly, although I do play the piano occasionally. I
took piano lessons from 7-15 years old. At the time, I didn't want
to, but looking back it was one of the most educational things I
could have done, and it really gave me an apprecation for music.
Even though I haven't seriously played the piano for 20 years, I can
still read music and bang out a song. I would like to learn how to
drum.
My current surf gear is: a MIJ Jazzmaster, several reissue
strats, including a D.D. replica I built and painted myself, and a
new Mosite ( I just got it, I'm still unsure of it) a RI Reverb
unit, and a '77 Fender Vibrosonic Reverb with the big 15" JBL D130F.
Here is a link to my Dick Dale replica guitar....its at the bottom of
the page.

The first record I ever bought by myself was "The Beach Boys in
concert". It was on 8 track, I think I was 7. Their version of Lets
Go trippin' is one of my favorite songs. Really, I got to the good
stuff through listening to the Beach Boys, hearing their versions of
songs, then finding the original bands. For years I wanted to find
a copy of Dick Dales "misirlou", but it was pretty hard here in
Colorado. As soon as I heard it, I was hooked! Surf Rules!

Alright, let's have a go at this....
How long have you been playing?
Going on 14 years now. I started really young (3rd grade... you can
do the math), but didn't really start playing much of anything
seriously until high school. Fortunately by then I knew HOW to play,
so I picked things up really fast. After countless punk and indie
rock bands, I got heavy into swing music in high school and started a
swing band in SF. After that was over, I decided I wanted to do
something where the guitar played more than just chords (and I can't
sing to save my life, so...).
What instrument(s) do you play?
Guitar is my main fix, but I also dabble in bass. I played tuba back
in the day, but could never afford one of my own. The day I do, you
can bet you'll hear the first surf tuba solo!
What got you into surf?
Apparently I've always loved surf. What really blew me away was when
I saw the Blue Hawaiians open for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy here in SF at
The Fillmore. After that I was TOTALLY hooked. But looking back, I
was buying Dick Dale tapes and "Rare Surf" bootlegs at flea markets
as far back as the early 90s.
~Bill~
Ok, I guess it's my turn to go at this one.
> How long have you been playing?
For right at three years now. I didn't start until I
was 21, and that was on bass. I didn't touch a guitar
until around two years ago...I mean, seriously, lived
in a house with several guitars that belonged to my
roommate and never touched one. Started playing
mostly power chords, learned Wipeout, then learned all
the open chords. I'm decent for a guy with only a few
years under his belt (and have about three times the
gear you'd expect) and I can hammer out some oldies
pretty well, but aside from that I don't have a lot of
technical knowledge. When I get the opportunity I'm
planning to take some lessons from someone here in
town so that I can start my own thing, writing my own
songs. I've been playing bass and sometimes guitar in
a cowpunk band for almost a year now.
> What instrument(s) do you play?
Mainly bass, which is where most of my money spent on
instruments has gone. I play out as a bassist and
only play guitar in my room or over at my
drummer-friend's house. Guitar is really secondary
for me at the moment, but all that'll change one day.
I also periodically try to learn how to drum, but that
is definitely a "not nearly as easy as it looks"
scenario.
> What got you into surf?
My earliest musical memories are of surf: early
Ventures, The Chantays, The Surfaris...those were the
comps and records that I listened to as soon as I was
old enough to operate my parents stereo on my own.
And The Beach Boys, of course. I listened to those
exclusively when I wasn't listening to the oldies
station up til about the 7th grade. I'd never
listened to anything else on the radio before then nor
did I ever watch MTV in my formative years, which in
retrospect is probably what I can most attribute my
taste and sense of decency to. When Pulp Fiction came
out, that of course rekindled my interest (I think I
was in the 9th grade?) and then one day while riding
with a friend of mine that was in a rockabilly band to
see The Queers in Atlanta he asked me what I listened
to besides punk. I whipped out the few surf CD's I
owned in addition to a few other oddities, and he
asked me if I'd ever heard of Man or Astroman? while
reaching for a cassette. I've been nonstop ever
since.

I'll give this one a go.
I've been taking guitar seriously for about five yrs.
I play a mid-eighties candy-apple red Jaguar, RI 63 Outboard Fender
Reverb(cap modded), 65 Blackface Showman w Single 15"cab(JBL D130F).
Currently havin fun playin surf in a band called "the Lowtides" in
San Antonio Tx.(a couple of hours south of Austin.) We're primarily
doing covers right now, but do have some originals.
In the Winter of '97, I tuned into our local college radio station
(KSYm 90.1 FM)&This guy had a one hour spot on Thurs.nights
called "Blue Xoam." He playedthe Mermen, Los Straitjackets, Man or
Astroman?, I was immediately bought. There's something truly
incredible about surf.
