first gig!

mono_tones_1 - 02 Feb 2004 07:04:23

hi,
just wanted to let you know that thursday a week ago (didn't get to
posting earlier) my band the mono-tones did our first real gig in a
local stage in Tilburg, netherlands. about 75 people showed up, and
we played a 50 minutes set of trad surf songs (margaya, surf party,
pipeline a.o.), 3th wave covers (intensity, $50 a midget, surfin'
tamales a.o.)and a couple of our own songs. I'm proud to say that it
was sort of a big succes, the audiance really liked it (and some even
danced!). We did play very well, and what's more, we weren't complete
nervous wrecks but actually managed to put on a show. For us, that
was the biggest accomplishment.
Also we got a lot of positive comments on our sound, which made me
very happy because it's pretty el cheapo backline, but a lot of work
went into it. bassman 100 for the bass, heavily modded twin in
bassman-matching-top-cab. both rest on identical custom made fender
style 22" x 37" cabs with 15" ALtecs .... it looks like a set
of 'piggybacks-on-steroids'! A Squier strat with duncans into a
cosmoverb tube reverb for me (with occasional danecho and boss od)
and an ibanez lawsuit rickenbacker copy for bass, loaded with a huge
fender pup. Laura backing guitar played a tokai strat with some
fender replacement pup straight into a fender 75 combo... her wearing
a silver glitter dress made up for using that amp ;-) We played
without PA and managed to fill the medium sized room.
anyway, we had lots of fun, and with all the applause and five free-
drink tickets each we felt well paid. I was happy as a kid with a new
toy!

Cool wannes. I had my first gig this past Devil's
Night and my second in December. We're kind of a
country-punk band, but we did do Wipeout (with me
doing the lead on the bass my guitar player playing
rythm...go figure) and Rumble. I was crapping my
pants on the first night and winced visibly at every
little mistake, but nobody seemed to notice. My plan
before graduating and leaving this town is to put
together a real instro surf band. Anyway, sounds like
you guys did good. Get us pics if you have any.
Richard

Nice going Wannes,
75 people is a good sized crowd, and it seems they dug it, so that's cool.
Good luck,
Ran

hi richard,
yeah i know, i used to 'crap my pant' all the time in my former band,
and all i had to do was play A E and D chords... sort of fuzztones
kinda band...
the funny thing is, the guy who organized the eveníng is in his late
40's / early 50's, and he was really enthusiastic about having a surf
band, because he used to be into 60's garage and surf in his old
days. After the gig he was as drunk as anyone else in the audience,
and kept telling us how great is was that we played 'wipe out' ...
except we didn't play wipe out. he must have been refering to the
penetrators' $50 a midget, which also has a strong short melody-riff
and a drum thingy (hey, wait, that describes half the set...)
we had asked a photografer, and therefor not asked anyone else to
take pictures, but they guy never showed. so no pictures
unfortunatly, also no video or recording. to be honest, we hadn't
anticipated on things going so well :-).
I did see one flash in the audience, so either someone toook a
picture, or got beamed up to his space ship.... not a clue who it was
though. i'll post pictures of the backline as soon as i get to it.
thanks guys for the thumbs up.
