What is a GOOD outboard reverb tank? and how much do they cost?

whipeoutboy63 - 06 Apr 2002 10:41:07

Hello,
Well I am a kind of new in surf and reverbland, I started recently
playing in a surf band, mostley playing MAN OR ASTROMAN? covers and
some other good Ventures stuff etc.
I used to play in "more Rocky bands" So I still have a SOVTEK MiG
100 Amp and a Marschall 4x12 cabinet. I know this isn't exactly
surf, but it works (for now).
I play a MIJ Jazzmaster and I use a small delay unit.
But I want to have some reverb, ofcourse....
I know Fender makes them, and I read here on the Victoria ones,
But is there more out there? I don't want to spend a fortune here.
So any advice would be greatly apreciated.
Kind regards,
Jerry

Jerry,
Fender pretty much owns the monopoly on outboard reverb units, but IMHO,
why would you want to own any other kind? A new one ('63 Reissue) goes for
about 400 bucks, and getting an original vintage one off of Ebay or whatnot
could run you from 600 for a JUNKY one to a grand for a mint one, and
anywhere in between. If you want to get into traditional sounding surf, you
HAVE to get an outboard reverb tank. Period. Unless you're just a Ventures
cover band.
Theres definitely a noticeable difference in sound between a reissue and
an original unit, but there is a modification that involves soldering that
can really dial-in a reissue reverb tank very very close to its original
counterpart. I've done the mod and it takes about 20 minutes, however it
completely voids your warranty.
In a nutshell, expect to spend 400 bones for a Fender outboard unit. You
could get a pedal I guess, but thats just so....nasty.

Jerry:
Dano has hit it right on the head - I can't really add too much to
what he said. If you get a Fender RI reverb tank, you may also want
to think about putting some decent NOS (New Old Stock) tubes in it -
that might run you an additional $40 - $50 or so. That helps the
sound out quite a bit, IMO.
I agree with Dan - for the Fender RI, you're going to have to plunk
down at least $400. Sometimes you can spot some used RI tanks on e-
bay, but you're still going to pay a few hundred bucks.
Of course, go with whatever sounds best to your ears (and
budget) . . . . for me it was the Fender RI reverb tank (with many of
the mods!). Good luck!

Hi Jerry,
I watched E-bay for a long time and managed to buy a brand new Fender
reissue unit in the box with foot pedal for $335 or so. When I was watching
them, thats about how much a used reissue would go for, and it usually
didn't have the foot switch (not a huge loss as it just turns the reverb
off/on...why do you need it off? ha).
After you get it, at minimum replace the 6V6 tube with a 6K6 (this is what
was used in the original circuit). That will make the biggest difference. Go
ahead and replace the rest of the tubes to New Old Stock (NOS) ones if you
like and want to spend another $10-$20. And finally if you are handy with a
soldering iron you can change out a capacitor. See the bookmarks for this
group...Dick Messick has a cool page with instructions on how to do that.
If you don't have the cash right now I have heard that people like the Boss
stomp box (RV-3 or RV-5???). I have also heard some people like this pedal
called the Little Lanilei by Songworks.

Hello Brain,
This sounds great. But I also got another question. Would it be possible
to self build a tube spring reverb unit?
With the right components of course.
My friens father is pretty good when it comes to building electronic
equipment. But can it be done?
I saw a reverb unit a e-bay, probably taken from an amp and it looks
pretty simple to me. (But I can be greatly mistaken, of course.)

I have been hearing around and reverb units by fender cost here in
Belgium about $ 750, no kidding..So you understand me searching for an
alternative. And we are talking re-issues, not the original
ones..Unbelievable..
So I was wandering If a self made item would also do the job?
I have seen Digital reverb units for around $ 350 new, but I would like
a more real sound..
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

that's just the spring part and won't do much on its
own. I got my reissue fender unit new for about $350
at a guitar store. I believe that one of the
guitarists in Surf Report made his own reverb unit.
Some alternatives that I've heard are the "vintage
Lafayette echo-verb II . It sounds alot like the 70's
Fender reverb tank".. and "Most of the time, answers
to that question include the $175 Little
Lanelei Spring reverb and the $100 Digitech RP100
emulator..." .... all of these I am sure don't sound
that great, but chances are that if you're into Man or
Astro-man and a little into the ventures that you're
not looking for the trad Dick Dale or Astronauts
sound.
I'm sure there are unique alternatives out there that
are cheaper.
My Crate practice amp actually dials in some serious
reverb if I set the high tone control down to 0 and my
low and mid to 1.2 and 4 respectively. Plenty of
spash and much deeper and lower in tone than my
reissue fender outboard unit.
So what kind of reverb sound are you looking for?

Hello Fred,
Thanks for the kind reply. Well I am more looking for the Fender reverb
sound; I like the splashes a lot.
The thing is I don't want to spend a lot on this. (Belgian prices an a
reissue tank are $ 750.SO.
If I could get them like you guys for $350 I wouldn't bother looking for
anything else.
But unfortunately this is not the case. I've looking around on e-bay
too, but no luck so far.
And if I find one, it will cost a lot to get it here.
I was really wondering if any other "less known" company made outboard
spring reverb tanks?
Perhaps copies of the original Fender tank?
I don't want to raise Hell here, if I could get it from Fender I would
certainly buy it from them.
But not at $ 750 for a reissue.

Building a reverb tank myself is what I intend to do.
What I would like to know from you people out there is, if there is a
difference (sonically) between the reverb springs used in a stand alone tank
and those used in the Fender amps?

Hello Roland,
Yes I did buy a Jazzmaster and got ripped off...Damn this happens to me
all the time.
I got it for 920 Euro and the same day bought it, I got a phone call
from Piens in Deinze telling me they could get it for 750 Euro..
Whaaaaaaa...I feel bad.
I complained of course to the shop in Antwerp, and he told me he would
look at it. (yeah right..)
But perhaps I can get some back, I've been a customer for over 8 years
in the store, so who knows..
Anyway it is a good guitar even for a Japanese made one. It sounds
really terrific (eases the pain a lot)
As far as the springs go I think they use the same, but the rest of the
components must be better.
Did you take a look at this web site? (scroll down to reverb kit)
This is a kit to build the reverb yourself using Fender components,
looks good, although you still would need to fabricate some kind of case
to put it in, unless you have room in your amp.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jerry,
I watched E-bay for a long time and managed to buy a brand new Fender
reissue unit in the box with foot pedal for $335 or so. When I was
watching
them, thats about how much a used reissue would go for, and it usually
didn't have the foot switch (not a huge loss as it just turns the reverb
off/on...why do you need it off? ha).
After you get it, at minimum replace the 6V6 tube with a 6K6 (this is
what
was used in the original circuit). That will make the biggest
difference. Go
ahead and replace the rest of the tubes to New Old Stock (NOS) ones if
you
like and want to spend another $10-$20. And finally if you are handy
with a
soldering iron you can change out a capacitor. See the bookmarks for
this
group...Dick Messick has a cool page with instructions on how to do
that.
If you don't have the cash right now I have heard that people like the
Boss
stomp box (RV-3 or RV-5???). I have also heard some people like this
pedal
called the Little Lanilei by Songworks.

Hope you get some money back Jerry.
I took a look at the web site with the kit and it seems to be ok but for
myself (being an electronic engineer) there is no fun bying a kit, so I want
to bild it from scratch and I want to alter some things. Using an EL84 in
stead of a
6K6 for instance.
The Reverb thanks they use in an amp or a stand alone unit are not the same.
I know for sure there is at least a mechanical difference but I wanted to
know from people on this list if there is a difference soundwise.

Hi Jerry,
Building a reverb tank myself is what I intend to do.
What I would like to know from you people out there is, if there is a
difference (sonically) between the reverb springs used in a stand alone
tank
and those used in the Fender amps?
P.S. I see you bought the Jazzmaster.

Jerry, Why don't you try to get one on E-bay? Thet go for about $300
-$400 us dollars, and even with the shipping it'll still be much
cheaper than Belgian prices. I used to live in the Nederlands, so I
realise how expensive gear can be in your part of the world. People
tell alot of horror stories about e-bay, but I've gotten lot's of
great deals on there, you just have to really check out the sellers
and really know alot about what you are bidding on. Good luck,
Viktor

Other reverb units? Why, sure! Lots of them.
Take a look at this:
