I was referring to a news item on the Laika and the Cosmonauts website
to the effect that there would be a US tour early this year. But looking
again just now the item doesn't appear to be there anymore - so maybe
there was plan that fell through... I'm sorry if I got your hopes up for
nothing.

Too bad, but I'm not suprised. It would be a pretty expensive
endeavor. Still it'd be very cool if they did.

It isn't so unlikely - they've played in the US a lot in the past. Just
check their web site:

Hi,
I checked their website and they still have a "U.S. tour" sheduled,
although the dates are still to be confirmed.
It looks like April-May 2004.
At the moment they are doing a lot of gigs in Finland.

So has anyone actually heard their new CD? Comments?
Thanks,

Yeah, I got it and am listening to it right now. It's totally
different from their previous stuff. That'll be good or bad
depending on your perspective. It's not the surf/spy thing that
they're so good at. A lot of it has a 70's MOR, Discoey vibe. Some
sounds like it'd be playing on a fusion jazz station.

I got my copy of Local Warning on Friday from zptduda and I've
listened to it a few times now. I think its a really strong record,
but its a long way from trad surf. It reminds me a lot more of another
Scandanavian band "the EuroBoys" in that its a pastiche of styles and
quotes from a diverse range of genres -- sometimes two or three in one
song. There's 80's cop shows, kung fu movies, surf stuff, jazz-fusion
a la Billy Cobham band, one piece that sounds like Little Feat meets
Frank Zappa, another that sounds as if they were channelling Angus and
AC/DC.
In other words a little something to piss off radio program directors
everywhere. I might disagree with some of the choices they made
production-wise, but you gotta give them credit--they're not making
the same record over and over again.
Thats very interesting, thanks. Hmmm... it sounds a little outside of my
interests, but they are such an incredibly creative bunch of guys that I
will check it out in any event. I really like "Laika Sex Machine" even
though its not (too) surfy either.
I think I heard that Local Warning got reviewed in Guitar Player magazine as
well. Anyone seen that review?
Thanks,
BN

How are The Euroboys? All I know is a former member has played lead
on the last two (amazing, but in no way related to surf) Turbonegro
albums.
-Warren
The Euroboys' album "Jet Age" is great. The rest of the albums are not so
good IMHO.
"Euroboy" is the lead guitarist for Turbonegro. All my friends from Israel
find Turbonegro amazing, but I don't see what the big deal is about. Not
bad, but not amazing.
Back to European instrumental bands:
Fifty Foot Combo has also moved into more early 70's influenced music in
their cd "Caffeine". Their first albums are more trad surf/garage with
exotica influences thrown in.

Are you going to Otto's Tiki Fest in Palm Springs in May? Were you there last

I heard about last year's event...but, unfortunately, I was
unable to attend. I would like to make the upcoming one in
May, 'cause the tiki scene is fun...I like hanging out at
Desert Hot Springs at the old-timey resorts. They are
cheap, and the water is HOT. My pal mammalike and her old
man Frank are cool to hang with, too. I think I saw old
Dick Dale out in Desert Hot Springs once...but, it's kind
of hard to tell with all the old foagies hanging out
there...they all seem to look like DD, even the ladies!
Anyway, Palm Springs and reverberation go together like
toast and marmalade. I'll be there if the old job scene
lets me take a few days off.
