I've always thought that the Beach Boys were an
excellent group to cover for Surf instrumentals.
David Marks and Carl Wilson had a unique lead-rhythm
sound together on the first few records, and the
Challengers' instro version of "Surfin' Safari" on the
SURF BEAT, VOL. 1 album is proof in the pudding.
Plus, the Beach Boys' minimal (almost flamenco-like)
version of "Miserlou" is terribly understated. It has
none of the strength of Dick Dale's hit version, but
then again, it seems to be the only Surf instrumental
version of the Middle Eastern staple that doesn't
actually try and equal Dale's energy (most fail
miserably), but goes off into another completely
different style.
In any case, the Beach Boys were at their coolest when
they were trying to be Dick Dale and they were wearing
Pendletons on stage. "Surf Jam" is ultimate and
everything the Beach Boys did for "One Man's
Challenge" is amazing.
Also, I have been hoping for years that a Walter
Wanderly Surf instro tribute would make its way into
the hands of Surf lovers. I dig the Surfer's Mood
style more than the raw forceful intensity of most
Surf songs. Don't get me wrong, "The Wedge" and
"Penetration" are zero-cool, but the moodiness of
songs like "Vampire" or "The Last Race" have a certain
unrecognized, unique vibe.
I also think that a Davie Allan tribute would be very
cool. I adore the Boardwalkers version of the theme
to 1967's "It's A Bikini World." It's very different
from the Arrows' original version, but definitely of
equal enjoyment.

Jon and the Nightriders did such a great instro tribute to the Beach Boys
with their California Fun E.P. It needs to be re-issued on CD. And you're
right about the Boardwalkers, BC, they are a great band with both their
originals and covers. They are playing at the Westchester Sports Girl on
Saturday night along with the Insect Surfers and the Fabulous Planktones
(that's me).
