Hey-
This was probably pointed out before, but I must have spaced it off. Head on
over to
where you can enjoy videos of the 2003 Shadowmania. Included are some really
great performances by Ivan's Troubadours. They are really on fire!!! Check
out the Man of Mystery video to get you started...

Yeah, Brian is right - these clips are great! My hat is off to Ivan and the
Troubadours - they are great! Watching these clips makes me nostalgic for the
Indy show last summer, and hoping that the Troubadours will be there in 2004!
For some fine playing, check these out the Troubadours and some of the other
bands featured. There are *lots* of videos!

Oh man, what a great job they did with those videos. I wonder what kind of
camera they used...the sound was GREAT!

Rethink your business approach for the new year with the helpful tips here.
I would be interested in purchasing a copy of those - for my own
private use of course - anybody know where or how?
Wow, I am blushing here.
Actually I am the one who made the videos and made these ready for
the website, hence my message. This is a very nice compliment and
I'd like to say thanks here...
BTW, it was just a simple cheap digital camera (Sharp) and I used
the mic that was part of the camera to record it all.
All was done on the fly.
Ivan and his merry man kicked ass (Sorry for the bold words here).
Of course the other folks were no sloughes either. The shadows and
the Fentones did a great job all by themselves.
Editing the videos and making these ready for the website was quite
the task. At one point in time I was occupying 185Gbytes (Yes,
Gbytes) of Hard Disk space. I am done and it's all backed up on
tape and DVDs now....
Good luck with this discussion group.....

Hey Hans, just wanted to say thanks for all your work on the videos.
They are great!
Check out Dane from the Troubadours playing drums on The Savage! He
got a great reaction from Bruce and Licorice.
BN
Actually Dane was the hero of the day.
I spoke with Bruce W. after the performance and he expressed his
admiration for Dane's playing several times.
Actually even before Bruce's performance I advised him to use Dane
as the drummer, but he was already comitted to the drummer that
played with him than. That guy was not bad, but he did not want to
do the Savage (!!!!) so Dane was asked to sit in.
And that was Dane's 15 minutes of (extreme) fame :) :)

Thanks to Hans for the video and to all the others involved in
organizing the event. It was a great thrill to play with Bruce and
Licorice in front of such ardent fans. I highly recommend playing
with world famous rock stars whenever possible.
It seems funny, in a cosmic sort of way, to me that the drummer
is getting so much attention on a group devoted to surf guitar. I
appreciate the kind remarks, but feel the need to point out that
Jim, Ivan Sr., and Ivan Jr. played incredibly well that night also.
The group as a whole did a fine job representing the U.S. surf
contingent.
Speaking of surf, the whole reason the other drummer didn't
want to play The Savage was because he thought it was too "surfy."
Sorry Brian N., but I think his name was Brian. He was a nice
enough guy and had great studio and touring credentials. He just
wasn't committed to the music.
Peace Out,
Dane

Hey Dane!! Welcome to the group!

As I have said many times; in hindsight this group should have been
called Surf Musician 101. There aren't enough of us around anyway to
be so segragated by instrument.

This is quite apparent in the videos.

Well I am not a drummer, nor do I play one on TV, but I wouldn't
think any drummer would pass up a chance to play The Savage with
several ex-Shadows members! Is it a difficult song for a drummer? I
already know I would not want to be the rhythm guitar player.
BN
Brian,
The Savage is like most Shadows songs, it is very difficult to play
like the Shadows did (regardless of instrument). I will admit
copping out on a couple of tunes and playing them the way I would
have played them instead of the way they were originally recorded.
Some of Brian Bennett's parts are too subtle for my taste. others
are simply too difficult to recreate note-for-note. I try to get
the point across and keep the part modern enough to still sound
contmporary. The fact that I won't break down and buy a vintage
drum kit (despite Ivan's urging) means that I am more likely to have
a "modern" sound anyway.
Back to The Savage, the part is not terribly difficult until the
frantic fills at the end. I think it was Tony Meehan that recorded
the drum part originally. He was very dynamic in the studio. He
seemed to have a way of placing fills so that you could find your
place in the song even if it was the third time through the bridge.
I think that Big Boy is an example of this.
Anyway, it's good to finally be posting here. I'm afraid I won't be
able to help much with figuring out how to get a '63 thingamajiggy
with a single coil doohicky to sound like a '66 whatsit plugged into
a VOX AC30 with a spring loaded reverbaration contraption.

Good question.
Honestly, I try to stay out of the DVD copying business. It's
rather time consuming, but for some real die-hard fans there is
always an exception to be made.
Send a message to and we'll talk about it.
I'll be gentle :) :) :),
