Hawaii Five 0

supertwangreverb - 16 Jan 2004 16:52:30

For some reason I cannot get the guitar part in this song from about
22 secounds in to about 30 secounds. I've checked online and all the
tabs are wrong for this spot. What am I doing wrong?
Regards,
Bill

Hawaii 5-0 first verse as recorded by Pollo Del Mar on "Live In Japan Town"
------------------------3---------3---6-3----------
---3-----------------3------66-3---------6-4-2-----
--3-5--------3------3--5--------3-------------5-3--
55---5---55-3-5---55-----------------------------5-
--------------------------------------------------3
---------------------------------------------------
8-5-----------------------------------------
---8-6---------------8---6-6-3-------4------
------7-5-----5-5/7-5---------3-5---5-------
---------8-6-8------------------------6-----
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
I can't say this is totally accurate, and the fingering will probably be
different from the way others might play it. The second and 3rd verses follow
different patterns.
good luck,

Ack, I made a mistake in the 3rd phrase- it should be:
------------------------3---------3---6-3----------
---3-----------------3------66-3---------6-4-3-----
--3-5--------3------3--5--------3-------------5-3--
55---5---55-3-5---55-----------------------------5-
--------------------------------------------------3
---------------------------------------------------
8-5-----------------------------------------
---8-6---------------8---6-6-3-------4------
------7-5-----5-5/7-5---------3-5---5-------
---------8-6-8------------------------6-----

You may want to check out The Mermen "Live at the Haunted House" CD. They
play a super slow version of Hawaii 5-0 (pretty cool how they did it). I
learned the song from that version; the slow speed helped me get all the
notes.

Brian,
Thanks for the recommendation...I honestly don't get it I've learned
tougher songs than this by ear but for some reason I'm having a hell
of a time picking it all out.

Bill

I think H5O is one of the most difficult of the surf standards. The chords go
way beyond the usual I-IV changes, and the melody changes a little for all three
verses, not to mention 3 modulations, and an odd bar of 10/4. Trying to pick
out the melody from the original Ventures version is hampered by the horn
harmonies. With all due respect to the Mermen's beautiful version, they do
embellish the melody a bit so if you want to do a fast version of the song, you
might not want to learn from them. I have heard so many versions of H5O, my
current faves being Bernard Yin of the Migs and Dave Wronski of Slacktone (but
it has to be a 3 set night for them to pull it out of the bag. And, of course,
you have to have a killer drummer!
