Re: Movin'// gotta have the astronauts version

bigtikidude - 04 Apr 2002 21:42:34

-Brian,
There are a few 2 fers out there with a mix of vocal and instro
songs, but your best money speant is a Japanese comp. titled movin'
the best of the astronauts. It's a little pricey, but well worth the
money. It's all instro, all the best shit.
Check yahoo or other online services, if you can't find it there.
I'll see if my work can order it, it's out of print, but sometimes
the Jap manufacturing plants get unsold returns.

I think that a year or two ago there was a US company Collectables that
released all the Astronauts stuff - cdnow has it. However, here is the
deal: the Astronauts only released four albums during their surf years,
and two of those were live that were more-or-less garage rock and very
slight in surf-instro content. That leaves the other two studio albums
"Surfin' With" (with Movin' on it) and "Competition Coupe". They both
have more vocals than instros, and the vocals are nothing great (with a
few exceptions on the Competition Coupe album). But the instros are
fantastic. Bear Family records from Germany has a CD with both of these
on it. I'd get that. BUT... you need one more CD: Rarities on Bear
Family also. Most of the best by the Astronauts was only released in
singles forms, and this CD collects all of these classic tracks: Surf
Party, Hot Doggin', Quasimoto, Surf's You Right, The Pier and more. With
these two CDs you can get all the Astronauts' instros. Get it now! The
Astronauts were the best. They really set the tone for most of the 90s
surf music, even more so than Dick Dale.

Ivan & Jeff:
Thanks for the Astronauts suggestions. I see that Cdnow is taking advance
orders for several Astronauts CD's; they must be imports as they are $30 a
pop. You don't see too many 3 guitar bands. I am interested in hearing how 3
guitars are used together in a song.

An instro group that used three guitars most effectively was the
String-A-Longs (the Ace label has a good comp). If you listen to those
tracks, you can really hear three distinct parts in interesting arrangements.
