the "iron cross" was invited (endowed) 1813 by König Friedrich Wilhelm III. von
Preußen (prussia?) for the merits for the fatherland against napoleons mastery.
so the history tells. the iron cross means bravery and chivalrousness, long
before hitler.

I would like to know how the surfer sub-culture of the 1960's latched onto
the Iron Cross. It's my understanding that returning veterans of WWII would
wear German helmets and Iron Crosses when they started their biker gangs, er
clubs. Sort of like war trophies. But I haven't heard about the surfers.
Perhaps its because the Iron Cross represents bravery?
