Movin'

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 04 Apr 2002 17:28:37

Hi,
I am working on learning Movin', the Eddie & The Showmen version (see for
example the Toes On The Nose comp). I think I have the lead worked out, but
the rhythm guitar is a bit hard to hear at times. I think the rhythm guitar
starts out playing a pattern in Em (I think he is using a xxx453 for the Em
chord) but I can't hear the changes too well after that. I am thinking this
part goes like this:
Em D? Em
lead guitar then goes up an octave, rhythm stays the same
then the song repeats in G
rhythm guitar: Gm F? Gm
then the song repeats in A
rhythm guitar: Am G? Am
and back to E
(keep in mind I only have a tenous grasp on theory)
Couple of questions:
Is this how you play it?
How do you suppose Eddie Bertrand got that bad *ss tone on the lead part?
Jaguar through reverb and a cranked Dual Showman?
I am very interested in hearing the Astronauts version, and ashamed to admit
I don't own any Astronauts albums. Is there a good compilation or box set
available that features their surfier stuff?
Thanks
BN

I wanted to thank all who responded to my post a couple of months ago reagrding
my search for MOVIN' as done by the Ventures. My parents told me they chucked
their tape because it was worn. Well, I was going through all of my cassettes
recently and found I had dubbed it onto another tape. I listened to it a few
times and was a little disappointed. It is the version I grew up but it just
didn't have the oomph I thought it would have.
I did recently get the Astronauts version and I LOVE it! I made the mistake
though of buying the double album on CD " Surfin' With The Astronauts/Everything
Is A-OK ." Irecently saw" Competition Coupe/Surfin' with the Astronauts " which
also has THE HEARSE on it. Has anybody heard this version. I've only heard the
FATHOMS version which is amazing (if course I don't have anyhting to compare it
to) Is there another version I should check out?
BTW, I use a 62 Jazzmaster and wouldn't trade it for anything.
I just wanted to say I love this group too!
That's all for now.

The Astronauts version of the Hearse is cool! I just heard the
original version, done by Al Casey on the new Legends of Surf Guitar
vol. 4. It is VERY COOL! It's slower, with more of a groove to
it. Very Very Dark sounding. Hard to believe a sound like that
rearing it's head in 1963-64.

The Hearse by the Astronauts is great! Another of their wonderfully
gigantic-sounding recordings.

Yeah!!! and it rocks....I love the bass guitar tone
with the pick attack.....Stormy Patterson is way
undertated......For my money, some of the best Fender
guitar/bass tones in history were captured on that
album.....I have about 6 or 8 copies of it......fried
