Hats off to Sean at Double Crown for putting out two killer comps within a week
of each other. I first got the international sampler with the long-awaited new
issue of The Continental (featuring overdue interviews with The Apemen and Fifty
Foot Combo) - great songs from both of those bands as well The Krontjong Devils,
Husky and The Sandmen & The Bradipos IV and more. Even a surf flute and fuzz
guitar version of The Clash's "Guns of Brixton" courtesy of The Anacondas.
More reason to check out the full-length releases by all of them & join me in
awaiting the release of the new Apemen album.
Second, I got the new "Diggin' For Gold" comp - another "gotta have it" disc,
which I believe I got through my music club membership - and what a surprise,
'cause I wasn't expecting it. Containing "21 insane instros from around the
globe, " it makes the perfect companion to the aforementioned sampler -
featuring great live tracks from The Apemen as well as strong contributions from
The Bitch Boys, The Kilaueas, The Krontjong Devils, The Metalunas , Urban Surf
Kings, Dynotones & Coffin Daggers. New discoveries for me include The Sea
Lions (this track makes The Royal Fingers recordings sound quiet) & The Daytonas
- there's some really dark stuff on this disc & I like it. The best part was
that I subscribed a long time ago, so both just showed up out of the blue.
OK, enough blowing smoke - looks like 2004 is off to a good start for surf.
