The Iron cross. When I was a youngster growing up in the Denver
Boulder area,The Iron cross ment Surfing and Surf music.Everyone had
one around their neck.It was really a big deal. Now days you don't see
Surfers Crosses much. There are a few Surf Bands that use them.It is
the main part of our Bands logo.Any one got any surfer cross
tales.........................................Maui
I don't think the 70+ year-old ladies in the little grocery store in Lichtaart,
Belgium were too thrilled by my Nebulas jacket with the iron cross, but I guess
they weren't surf fans. Maybe I need an S3 patch on the other side to achieve
cultural balance.

to US-surfers visiting Europe; the iron cross in Europe is nowadays
worn as a symbol by neonazi's and skinheads... i can imagine TFJ not
getting friendly reactions. ... actually, even calling it a 'surfers
cross' might get strange reactions.

I would like to know how the surfer sub-culture of the 1960's latched onto
the Iron Cross. It's my understanding that returning veterans of WWII would
wear German helmets and Iron Crosses when they started their biker gangs, er
clubs. Sort of like war trophies. But I haven't heard about the surfers.
Perhaps its because the Iron Cross represents bravery?

Brian:
Your understanding is probably pretty much close to the way the use
of the iron cross as a surfer/hot rod symbol evolved. Check out the
linked discussion on the Club Hot Rod Forum:
I'd guess that people picked up on it in the late '50's or
early '60's because they thought it looked "cool", without giving
any thought to any of the meaning the symbol has had over the
years. I think that a lot of things creep into popular culture like
that - based upon appearance and not much else.
I dunno, just a guess . . .
