Out of phase switch on the dano hodad....

skatalite_of_love - 11 Jan 2004 14:26:44

I am not particularly sure what this does exactly.. in middle
position it sounds funky, but in the bridge position it sounds just
like the coil tap just with more substance... does any one know how
this works exactly?

As far as I understand it, it does almost nothing unless it's in the middle
position, because in the mid position it gives an option of having the 2
pickups operating out of phase in relation to each other. When you switch to
the bridge or neck position the one pickup you're using is not gonna be out
of phase in relation to itself.
It's an interesting sound, but pretty useless for a live band situation,
especialy a surf band, IMHO.

skata:
I have a Hodad, and here is what I think is going on:
the Hodad has two humbuckers...actually single coil
lipsticks wired as humbuckers. One switch produces a coil
tap (sort of a single pickup emulation) while the other
switch produces in-phase/ out-of-phase sound on the
selected pickup.
so the permutations:
1. bridge, neck or both straight (no effect)
2. bridge, neck or both coil tap
3. bridge, neck or both out-of-phase
4. bridge, neck or both coil tap and out-of-phase
I like the twang of my Hodad with the coil-tap and middle
position on pick-up selector.
I run it through a RI fender reverb and a blackface
Bassman.
good luck,
dp
