Action is too high, any tips?

Landlocked (theesurrealist) - 09 Jan 2004 15:12:56

Yes it's another gear question: The action on my CIJ Jazzmaster is
too high. It came with 0.10 nicklewounds, and I just installed 0.11
Flatwounds. I noticed the action rose considerably. Should I adjust
the truss rod; tighten or loosen the screw on the trem-lock system;
does anyone have any tips?-Phillip

Hi Phillip,
I had the same problem with my CIJ Jazzmaster. I adjusted the tuss rood
with a quarter turn or a little les (tightening). This took care of the
problem. The 0.11 Flats have a bout two Kg more tension per string when
compared to 0.10 roundwounds. (compared a 0.10 roundwound d'Addario to a
0.11 d'Addario Flatwound set. They have a diagram of tension per string
on the back of their packages)
Tightening the trem spring won't adjust your action, just the trem. (but
this could be usefull as well after a string change from round to flat.
As for the adjustment for the tuss rod
"Right(y)-Tight(y)/Left(y)-Loose(y)" (Thanks Roland B. for this phrase))
Also Check Mr. gearhead.com for DIY tuss rod adjustment.
You will have to unscrew the neck or take it off completely to adjust
the tuss rod. (I usually take the neck off, since I find it easier to
work with the tuss rod) It could be a bit of a trail and error method to
find the action that's right for you.
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

How long should you let the neck "settle" after an adjustment?

Hi,
Since I usually take the neck off, I have to put the guitar back
together.
So once that is done (approx 5-10 minutes) I start to put the sting on,
but usally don't tune at that point.
I just give some tension to each string and tune after 30 minutes.
Sometimes I tune even after the neck and strings are set back on.
Since the tuss rod works like a screw with bolt, the wood can't go
anywhere. So I guess no harm can be done there.
I did this to most of my guitars once or more (depending on whith type
of stings I use and which action I prefer) and I never had a problem
with any of those (Some where real cheap guitars like strat copies, Aria
Diamonds, etc...)
When I take the neck off, I do this by loosenening the four screws a bit
first, then take them out one by one, slowly.
I usually work "crosslike" so one comes out, then the oposite screw (as
in an X)
If you don't feel comfortable with this, take you guitar to a tech and
ask him to adjust the tuss rod when you watch. (the guitar tech of my
local instrument store is a nice guy and he learned me some tricks and
techniques) So I now do most of the work myself, it's cheaper and more
satisfying. (and to think this all started with a faulty factory set
Jazzmaster bridge, most techs are not too familiar with the Fender
Floating trem design or the "rockin bridge")
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

The truss rod should be used to set the string relief on the neck
properly. This adjustment is usually required several times a year
depending on the humidity changes where one lives. There is no exact
right answer to what the relief should be. Some players favor more
relief than others. To check relief, put a capo on the 1st fret, then,
while fretting the 14th fret, check the distance between the string
and the top of the 7th fret with a feeler guage-- I usually look for
relief of about .010". Once the neck relief is adjusted, then the
bridge can be raised and lowered to taste. Some players like to adjust
the string height to a specific value, I prefer to lower the strings
pretty radically, and then raise the bridge and/or the saddles until
there is no buzzing on any string on any fret when moderately
strummed. When changing string guage, the intonation will also have to
be reset, and when moving from smaller to larger guages, the nut slot
may need to be expanded to avoid string binding.
When adjusting a bolt on neck, I usually do not remove the neck, I
loosen the strings, push the D and G strings aside, and unscrew the
neck screws till it is possible to simply tilt the neck back to reach
the tension rod. I adjust the rod no more than a quarter turn, retune,
and check for proper neck relief. I usually wait no more than 10 or 15
minutes between tension rod adjustments. I always recommend that any
guitarist learn about guitar setups, there are several books available
with good guidance--and as with most things, practice makes perfect.
