New guitar for Christmas

Vince Frank (mournblade1066) - 08 Jan 2004 09:38:59

Hey all!
For Christmas, I bought myself a new guitar: a Fender Squire Strat.
I bought it for $150 at Guitar Center in Monroeville, PA.
Yeah, I know it's a cheap guitar, but it works for me for the time being--I'm
on a budget and what not.
I also picked up a DigiTech DigiVerb reverb pedal, too. The spring reverb
is really quite convincing (to me, at least). I'm having a blast with this
thing!
Does anyone out there know anything about the Feder Squire Strats?
I've had some people tell me not to put heavy gage strings on (nothing higher
than, say, 10s). But I'm used to playing 11s, and really miss the feel of
those.
Is it safe to put those on one of those Squires???
Thanks!
Vincent

Vince,
I also got a Squire Stagemaster "Strat". I had it set-up with flat
wound 11's on it. That was about a month ago. I have not noticed any
change in action or increase in string height. Yes, the guy in the
shop warned me about it, but I shot from the hip on a cheap guitar.
He added 2 extra springs to the tremelo. Since I got that guitar set-
up, I haven't put it down. So, is it safe? You may not lose your life
playing the Squire with 11's (unless a 11 e-string suddenly snaps and
severs your jugular vein). But so far mine has held well this last
month. Take a chance, what the heck, it's only China's finest to you
from Fender for $150, or about a 6 pack of good beer a week for about
a half a year.

Did you get a Standard or Affinity Squier? Either
way, I would think it would be ok, but that's my
relative inexperience talking. I had an Affinity
Strat for a little while that seemed perfectly fine in
terms of build...I had 10's on it. On the whole
scale, 11's aren't THAT heavy are they? It's not like
the neck is made out of particle board.

If it is Squire Bullet, then the body is suspect and may be made of
plywood and tortilla chips. My guitarshop guy warned me in general
about 11's on any Strat. Maybe that was some legal-ese he uses to
protect his business.

Hi Vince,
I recently put 0.11 d'Addario Chromes on a MIM standard strat (from a
friend of mine), they went on without problems. I had the neck adjusted
to get an equal action as with 0.10 rounds. I did add an extra spring to
the trem. The thing plays very fine.
Santa brought me, with a little help from myself a nice "Sonic blue" 97
Vista series (MIJ) JagMaster....a very sweet guitar....
It's also suitable for surf, but that's not my main goal with it. could
be nice as a backup though for my Jaguar since the neck is identical to
my Jaguar.
Kind regards,
Jerry S.
