What is this noise my amp is making?

Landlocked (theesurrealist) - 06 Jan 2004 23:47:22

I just recently got a 69 SF Super Reverb, it makes a low rumbling
static sound even with the volume turned all the way down. It's not
too annoying but maybe you guys can give me some ideas. Could it have
anything to do with the Power tubes? They look pretty old. Or is it
something internal? -Phillip

While the amp is on and turned up, tap on the power tubes. If they make loud
noises, they should be replaced. Don't forget to bias. The GrooveTube 6L6GE is a
pretty good replacement.

It's the capacitors. They need to be replaced. Almost all old amps
have this problem. It's like changing your strings, ya just gotta do
it. ~Mike

Check the tubes as Dave suggested and examine the speaker plug. I had
a very similar thing going on with my SFTR and I found out the plug
was wacked (falling apart). If it is the original plug it may need to
be replaced.
The speaker is also a suspect. Check to see if you hear this static
rumbling noise coming from one and only one speaker. If you do switch
it out for another known good speaker and see if the problem goes
away. If not, consider your electrolytic filter caps on the underside
of your chassis. If they are original Mallorys then they most
definitely need to be replaced just for your amps sake- whether or
not that takes the noise away.
I hope this trubleshooting help helps. Take care. JWL (aka Dario)
