Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 06 Jan 2004 21:08:55

Through entirely unexpected circumstances at Christmas, I now find myself
owning all the CD's from SMOASP. I've heard their stuff before, and always
liked what I heard, but never sought any of it out. I think I made a
mistake. My wife is already learning Spy School Graduation Theme. Big Link
Wray style chords with Duane Eddy'ish twang with lots of atmosphere and
vibe. Its not surf, as they vehemently state in the song "Were Not a F******
Surf Band", but surf fans will dig this. I haven't listened to it all yet,
but what do others think? Any particular songs I should listen to first?
Thanks (just trying to get some discussion going again...)

Brian:
Ever since Kids in the Hall, the Shadowey Men have been
tops with me. I love their CD "Chill the Ham" and almost
all their stuff is extra-creative and energetic. And even
though they say they are not surf...wel, no matter what
they say, they're surf.
It's too bad that they did not get the opportunity to
release more...but, what we did get from the Shadowey Men
is almost priceless.
good luck,
dp
ps: you should try to learn the Kids in the Hall Theme...
it's a cool one.

I'm a huge fan of SMOASP!!
Learned how to play bass by attempting to figure out their
songs. The Penetrators first show included about 5/20 songs
from them (we had one original).
This included: Bennet Cerf, Spy School Graduation Theme, Who
Framed Whistler's Mother, Egypt Texas, Aunt's Invasion.
We joke around and say we should have called ourselves," The
Shadowy Penetrator Men on A Shadowy Penetrator Planet."
In all, we know around 15 -17 Shadowy men songs. Great
Variety in the song writing.
A new discussion string:
Set lists for your first show?
Here is ours, as far as I can remember. In no particulat order.
March 1994
Bennett Cerf - SMOASP
Aunt's Invasion - SMOASP
Egypt, Texas - SMOASP
Spy School - SMOASP
Whistler's Mother - SMOASP
Pipeline
The Wedge - DD
Miserlou - DD
Banzai Washout - DD
Walk, Don't Run - Ventures
Our Favorite Martian - Bobby Fuller 4
Lucha Libre - The Finks
The Cruel Sea - The Treble Spankers Version
Baja - The Astronauts
James Bond Theme/ Secret Agent Man
Mr. Moto
Bikini Drag - the Pyramids
Last of the V8 Interceptors - The Penetrators
I think there was a couple more Ventures tunes in there
somewhere.

If you like Shadowy Men, check out Atomic 7 ("Gowns by Edith Head"),
the latest band featuring Brian Connolly, the guitar player from
SMOASP. Different but similar, if you know what I mean.

Get Atomic 7 now, if you don't have it. It's available from

Hey Trace,
Was Spanky in the band when you played the SMOASP tunes? Just wondering if
he had to make up rhythm guitar parts for them.
The bass lines are very critical to SMOASP's sound...pretty inventive stuff!
So which one of their albums do you like the most? I listened to fragments
of all their CD's, and the "Dim the Lights, Chill the Ham" CD sounded the
least appealing (although it had some good songs). The other two sounded
better, at least on first listen.
Thanks,
BN

We started out as a 3 piece. Spanky would jump on stage 3/4
the way through the gig wearing airborne jump gear (including
parachute), then strip to James Bond Theme unveiling a Tuxedo
underneath. Then we would rip into Bennett Cerf. He added
rhythm to most of the songs later, and we kept a couple 3 piece
numbers ready for when he would go out of tune, which was alot
since he played a '86 Rickenbaucher back then.
The bass lines are incredible. When SMOASP's bass player
passed away a couple of years ago, we learned "Reid's
Situation" in honor of him. I tried and tried to figure that bass line
out. Ended up faking on some of it. I remember thinking to
myself that Reid was getting a kick out me dog-cussing his
talent in bass writing.
I'm like you, no particular favorite album. I lean toward the
melodic, more structured tunes.
