65 twin reverb reissue

zzonetow - 01 Jan 2004 02:59:44

Ho, yes another novice surf guitarist, well sort of. I've recently
put some layaway cash on a Fender 65 twin re-issue. I've heard
there were problems with the circuit board wiring. But, the tone
when I played it through my strat was fathom-able! Any last minute
comments, before I pay the final cash? I'm planning on using it for
Cossacks, Dale, Fathoms, and the like..
Thanks,
AGS

Hi,
IMHO, these amps are not so bad tone wise if you're just playing alone at
home.
However, while they do sound close to the old amps, their tone is certainly
not as good.
I'm not talking about one amp I heard and played, but several amps, in
different places. Some of them sounded better, some sounded worse, but they
all had no depth and a certain fuzziness that couldn't be dialed out.
Reliability wasn't good with the ones I played over time. In fact, our
record label had bought a new one and it needed to be replaced twice. They
also had some used ones and they needed constant repair.
If you ever had the chance to play one right next to an old Blackface or
Silverface, you'd immedietly hear the difference.
Yes, the old ones are harder to find, but they are cheaper, and their value
will rise, while as the reissue Twin Reverbs will probably drop in value.
Once you get an old Silverface and have a good amp tech overhaul it, it can
serve you for many many yeas without too mcuh problems.
I'm sorry I'm "raining on your parade", but if you can still back out of the
deal, I'm pretty sure you won't be sorry in the long run. These amps are not
cheap, so I'd hate to see someone spend their hard earned cash on something
that would probably not be the best choice.

I'll chime in here - the reissues can be made to sound very good with
tube upgrades, but I have seen the poor reliability issues also.
It's a bigger hassle but try to find yourself a silver face model
(even the master volume ones can be made to sound good) and a good
tech and in the long run you'll be better off
buy the earliest and cosmetically best model you can find - it will
keep its value the best

Thanks for all the advice. I'll see where I am in a few months, but
right now I'm locked into it. Most of the dealers around here will
take trade-ins, if I decide to go that route.
Thanks again,
AGS

AGS,
Here's an idea, Pickup a replacement board from Vintage Sound works in
Ottawa. Then you'll have the real thing !!

I just traded mine in. Played her regularly every week for about a
year, I found that the sound on the ReIssue Fender stuff is a liitle
thin. However, I did replace the stock 6L6 GTubes with NOS
7581As......they really opened up the sound. Check out KCA NOSTubes.
However, my quest for that "sound" has left me trading her in. Good
