Fender pick up configuration...

Johnston, Rick (ricknautica) - 16 Dec 2003 10:49:24

Greetings snowed in wave slashers!
Can anyone explain the Dick Dale pick up configuration?
Specifically, what are custom '50s pickups with special switching and a
master volume?
I'm still pondering the ideal set up for my 62 reissue strat and this set up
intrigues me!
Thanks and Happy Holidays, rick!

I built a D.D. strat a while back, and tried to set it up like the
Custom Shop D.D. guitars. I started with a 62 reissue MIJ strat,
then I bought a set of Fender Custom Shop "Custom 50's" pickups,
which I think are overwound 50"s reissue pickups with a reverse wound
middle. The special switching is an on/off switch for the neck
pickup, located kinda where the pickupswitch is located on a
jazzmaster, a five way switch, and a volume knob, no tone knobs.
Dick Dale claims that tone knobs cut some of the highs, even when it
is turned all the way up. I think that is the way they are set up
from the custom shop, but I may be all wet. One thing I wasn't able
to duplicate was the reverse peghead and the reverse angled bridge
pickup, but I don't know if it is that big a deal.
In case you are curious, I like the way it sounds, and the neck
pickup switch is kinda cool because you can use all the combinations
of pickups. It is a really bright sounding guitar, and it is best
suited for lead playing, esp. Dick Dale type stuff. I found that I
needed some kind of tone control, so I ultimately installed a master
tone knob. I was able to play it last week through a '65 dual
showman, and it sounded really good, very D.D. like, although the
people I played with may not think so....
Anyway, that is my humble opinion on the subject, but I may be
totally off here....
