Strat pickup rewiring

Ric Flinn (zanshin09) - 12 Dec 2003 16:38:39

Since there hasn't been enough talk of strat pickups
lately, :-)
I'd like to modify my strat so I can use the bridge
and neck pickups simultaneously. I'd still like to be
able to get the existing combinations as well (mainly
I don't want to give up my bridge-middle setting), so
I was thinking of changing the neck tone control
(which I've never ever used) into a neck pickup
volume. Has anyone done this, or is there a better way
to go about it? I don't actually know how to do this,
just yet, and I'd appreciate any pointers.
Ric

Hi Ric,
That is certainly doable. An easier method, IMHO, is to replace one of pots
with a push/pull pot. That way you retain the original functionality without
any routing, and gain an extra switch. Use the switch in the push/pull pot
to turn on/off the bridge pickup.
I've never figured out the strat control scheme: 3 pickups, either a 3-way
(vintage) or 5-way switch, and two tone knobs? That doesn't let me exercise
all pickup combinations; and why 2 tone knobs? I can see 1 or 3, but 2? I
guess I prefer a richer user interface :) <that's the computer geek in me
speaking>

I wire all my Stats the way the "James Burton" Telecaster is wired. With a five
position switch {different style than the typical five way Strat} I get all the
same sounds except the middle position gives me the neck and bridge pickups
together. To hear the middle pickup by itself, I installed a tone control that
has a push-pull switch that the middle pickup is wired to. So, wherever the five
way is set, if I pull up that tone knob/switch I hear the middle pickup.
You might find the wiring diagram on a guitar web-site. The switch you can
probably get at www.allparts.com

Stewart MacDonald Guitar Shop Supply sells a switch they call the Megaswitch.
It's a direct replacement for the stock Strat switch. The "E" model gives you
the option of bridge, bridge & middle, bridge & neck, middle & neck and
neck. You lose the middle only option but you don't have to mess around with too
many controls to get the right sound. this link will give you the details:
egaswitches/Instructions/I-3484.html#details

Can anyone explain how DD wires his pick ups, as opposed to James Burton?
Thanks, Rick!
