Hello
Ok first of all I know nothing about pickups really. Anyways I just
bought a cheap guitar off of a friend for 25$ just to fix it up and
play around with. It's called an El Degas. So I rewired all the
pickups (I looked at my other guitar to see how it was done) and
fixed it up a bit and it turns out I like it better then my crappy
Samick guitar. The guitar has three pups, 2 singles and a double by
the bridge. The problem is that the bridge pup seems to be dead. I
would like to order a half decent but not too expensive pup off the
internet for the guitar but I don't know what I need. Firstly, I
don't know what pup would have a good clean sound and secondly I've
heard some stuff about the pups cancelling out magnetic fields and
stuff so I'm wondering if I have to get a certain one to go with the
other two already in there or will any humbucker work? Anyone have
any suggestions on what to buy? where to buy? etc? I live in Canada.
Also I've noticed that the two pups in there really start to scream
when I crank the volume, it's not just like they distort but let out
a piercing squeal. There doesnt seem to be any shielding in the body
cavity. Could it be that or just cheap pickups, or both? What can I
use for shielding? Tinfoil?
thanks
Colonel,
Any old humbucker should do, its just up to you and your tastes and
how much of a pickup you want to put into a cheap guitar.
I suspect the pickups are squealing because they are el-cheapos;
shielding would just eliminate humming or buzzing.
I'm not up on humbuckers, but there are many companies that make
replacements. Seymour Duncan comes to mind. You can also buy pickups
from Fender and other guitar manufacturers.
Good luck!

For a cheap guitar I would just scout eBay and pick up
some other stock pups that somebody is getting rid of
and take care of shielding like Brian mentioned.
But if you want a nice 'bucker, I'd say Seymour Duncan
'59's or Distortions. I have a SD Distortion in the
bridge of my Jagmaster and it sounds great for rock 'n
roll.

I'd look for a DeArmond Gold Tone. I think Angela Instruments had a
bunch for cheap a while back. For cheap-o stock pickups, they sound
really, really good. Nice clean tone, not muddy at all. I use 7-
strings, so my pickup options are limited. I'm buying the 7 pole
versions of these whenever I see them. Better than $100 a pop for
Seymours or something...

Use copper foil if you're going to bother with shielding, though it
won't make a bit of difference for the squealing or "microphonics"
you're experiencing. That's a result of cheap manufacturing,
usually. You could "pot" your pickups, and it will likely eliminate
the squeal. Check out:
