pickup advice needed again

mono_tones_1 - 08 Dec 2003 03:44:32

this might be a lame question...
since the middle pup on a strat is reverse wound and reversed
polarity.... could i also use two rw/rp pups as bridge and neck, and
us a normal for the middle position?
If i have two strat players in the band, would the strats start
cancelling each other out? would i have to reversewire one of the two
amps' speakers...?
help would be appreciated,
wannes

Hi Wannes,
Not necessary. Look at the Bel-airs, they used two strats, but the
accent of the playing was different between Eddie Bertrand and Paul
Jhonson. Normally when two strats are used together, they don't use the
same pick up setting. For example, lead uses the middle pick ups, while
the rythem strat uses the neck (That's how Belgain's surf combo " the
incredible sucking spungees" use them)
We also use a strat for rythem, and a Jag for lead stuff, so pick up
wise pretty close. I mostly use the two pups together on my Jag, while
the rythem uses the neck or mid pick up and sometimes both neck and
bridge (his strat is rewired)
But then again many goes back to the amp that is being used and haw loud
they are set (treb/mid/bass, etc...)
Or like the astronauts were the rythem uses for more reverb then the
lead (I guess??) but it sounds very intersting and is so typical for the
astronauts sound. (O.K. three guitars thru showman's and JBL on a
prototype reverb tank, are not the same, I know....but still an
intersting sound)
Of course this is a mere observation and not a technical answer to your
question.
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

Hey All,
Here's omething I've been wondering about: Which pick-up do most of
the strat players here use for surf? I tend to use the bridge, but
sometimes prefer the middle one.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
I did the exchange mod between middle and bridge, so now my bridge
pup is the RW/RP one.
I then use neck-bridge for most songs, and occasionally bridge-middle
for a little bit more bite. I find the pickups on their own to be
either too thin and harsh in the highs (bridge) or to 'hollow' (neck
and middle).... then again, these are probably not the best
pups.....
