Anyone play the new Custom Fender Jassmasters coming out
of China? Played one today, felt good, but of course it was new. I
was wondering If they hold up for the price?
Here they were priced @ $650-$750.
First of all, an extremely warm welcome to you Trace. My wife is
trying to learn how to play "50 Bucks a Midget" on the bass right
now and is marvelling at and cursing your name at the same time... :)
Seriously, your bass lines really propel those Penetrators tunes!
I asked about the new Jazzmaster & Jaguar guitars over at the Fender
Forum a few months ago. The answer I got from Morgan (Ringwald?) at
Fender was that these are made in Japan. There was some initial
confusion because the original ad at Musician's friend said they
were made in America. They seem like a good deal, and are rumored to
have the same pickups as found in the American Vintage series
reissues. I haven't played one, but some other people on here have,
I hope they will chime in.
As for your other question about reverb tanks; that's a joke
right? :) It seems like we talk about them on a weekly, no hourly,
basis. If you search the archives you should find lots of stuff. But
hey, we do enjoy talking about them, so lets start again.. As for
hot rodding them, check out Dick Messicks very cool page:
I've done the tube swap and cap mod and am very happy with my
reissue. Some people still think they sound too "ice-pick" harsh
though.
You can get a new reissue 'verb at Musician's friend. Vintage units
go for big bucks on Ebay ($500-$700); even used reissues fetch
nearly the same price as a new reissue. Its crazy. Musician's Friend
even had a special reissue that came in black (all of the new
reissues are brown).
Thanks for signing up!

I'll second that big time! 50 bucks rocks (btw, where did that title
come from?), but it was checkpoint echo that really blew me away. I
think the first song where figuring out the bassline took me longer
then the guitarparts. great stuff.
despite the lists' name, it's good to have other instrumentalists
then guitarists on here.

Bass is a kind of guitar!!!
Seriously, in hindsight I would have called this group Surf Musician
101, as I appreciate the insights of drummers and other musicians
also.

Thanks for the compliment Brian, I appreciate it.
The guy's in band have a running joke about how I've never met
a bass line that I didn't try to make more complicated.
Sounds good on tape, but jumps up and bites me sometimes
live. Thrill of Victory, agony of defeat kind of thing.
Thanks also for the info, it is archived. The only thing I have to
do now is hide the money from my wife to buy one of each,
HeHeHeHeHeHe.....................................uh, Hi honey.

P.S. If your wife needs some help on those bass lines, let me
know. Maybe Simon will declassify some hints....... :)

Thanks wannes for the compliments!
Regarding 50 Bucks, In short as possible.
If I remember correctly, we were walking around Nashville before
a show, joking around about a side project idea called, The
D.S.M.M (Dung Slingin' Monkey Men)
The premise was to dress in gorilla outfits, jump in the back of a
truck, ride to the gig throwing slightly melted Baby Ruth candy
bars at people, jump on stage, sling more candy bars, play 2-3
three note tribal 60's garage tunes (grunting the words of
course), then leave as fast and in the same way we came.
Midgets were to be used as hostages/roadies to make us look
bigger. We started talking about the cost of this venture, and
someone asked how much the midgets would cost. I think Rip,
in his calm matter-of-fact way, said, "Oh, about 50 bucks a
midget." We laughed for about 3 days on that one, and decided
to one day name a song after that quote. And there you have it!
I'll send this to Spanky for clarification.

Hi what a great site! I have played both the Jaguar and the new
Fender Japan Jazzmaster. They both look sound and feel like the real
thing with one exception. Guitar Center would sell more of everything
if they would pay a good tech to upgrade the sometimes poor factory
set-up! Oh well, that makes to much sense..lol wish Fender would do
an American Carl Wilson tribute Jaguar and a vintage reissue of the
Dual Showman as well! Your thoughts? Keep Rockin!!!

Wouldn't a Carl Wilson Jag just be a regular ole Oly
white Jag with a red tort gaurd? And a Dual Showman
reissue sounds like too much to hope for...as much as
they're revered here, are there any other folks out
there that covet them to the degree that surf rockers
do?

Hehehe....sounds like the apemen from Holland.
They do the Gorilla outfit thing here in the low lands, not throwing
candy but doing "hardcore" versions of pipeline, squad car etc...
I'm sure Wannes can comment on that!
Kind regards,
Jerry S.
From what I've heard you shouldn't expect a Showman reissue from Fender. They
have much more sales success with combo amps. However, there is a new "Twin
Reverb" {I don't know why they call it that} that is a combo amp with a four 6l6
Twin Reverb chassis with one Eminence "Generic D130" speaker.

Richard asks an interesting question - are Showman coveted by any other genre as
much as the surf crowd? If so, I imagine it's a small crowd - like Dave
implies, if there was demand, there would be a reissue. But who else is
scooping these things up on ebay, etc.?

A "Twin" with one speaker huh? Why do they call it
that then? Anyway, is this something that's been
launched yet?

After getting my Showman and during it's road to recovery, I was a pretty
hardcore reader of the Vintage Amp and the Amp Repair forums over at the
Fender Forum. It was my impression that these amps *are* popular amongst the
non-surf crowd. I didn't really ask what music these guys played, but I do
recall a couple of guys mentioning blues, country, and just rock and roll.
Plus many of them were bass players. A black face Showman has the same
circuit as the black face Twin Reverb, Bandmaster, etc. I think black face
amps have this mythical quality anyway, so guitar nuts buy them if/when they
can find them.
They were Fender's top of the line amp at one time; maybe that has something
to do with it too.
Tell us more about the new "Twin", Dave. Is that out yet?
Thanks,
BN
