Just wanted to chime in on the old JBLs. I use a JBL K120 in my
deluxe reverb and I think it's the greatest thing since reverb! I
could not approach that crisp, chimey surf sound I wanted with the
stock eminance or a Weber C12N.
As I understand it, the K series replaced the D series with a more
durable cloth surround vs. a paper one. Both series long since
discontinued.
I would love to hear if anyone has been able to compare the new
vibroverb / eminance to a D130 or K130? Any other experience out
there with JBL substitutes?

Are the D and K series speakers alnico or ceramic? I'm not up on JBL
speakers.
thanks,
Steven

The D and K series JBLs used a big 4" voice coil with an AlNiCo
magnet in the middle. There is a big cast iron pot and top plate
that covers the back and serves to focus the magnetic field around
the voice coil. They have a beefy, cast aluminum frame. Real serious
looking unit.

Standell has re-created the JBL D130F using the same company {not JBL} that made
the cast baskets of the originals. I haven't checked in a while, but you JBL
lovers will have to justify your love to the tune of $600 each for these. Maybe
those $33 Jensens don't sound so bad after all. Inquire:

D's are alnico. E's are ceramic. K's, not sure but I'm surprized to hear some
people like them. I haven't tried them, but have not heard good thing said about
them until now.

In 1976 when I got my new Twin Reverb, I had the dealer put JBL K120's in it.
They have huge Alnico magnets and each speaker is able to handle 100 watts
constant... not just peaks.
The amp didn't seem as heavy when I was 14 years old...
