Best of 2003?

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 28 Nov 2003 20:39:55

Okay, I got nudged in the ribs, so I'll post the perennial almost end of the
year question:
What is the best surf release of 2003?
I think that's a toughie (slim pickens?) this year, but if you include the
Link Wray and Morricione tributes it looks less grim.
I'll start.... Infrared's "Recorded on Microfilm"........?
BN
PS: Haven't heard The Mach IV disc yet...

Dick (flatwound01) - 29 Nov 2003 08:06:12

That is a tough one! Can we vote for the "Lost Legends of Surf
Guitar" vols. 1 - 3? ;)
The Infrareds's "Recorded on Microfilm" is up there in my book.
Also of note are the Hypnotic IV's "Go Baby Go!" and the Celebration
of Life comp.
Honorable mention goes to Mel's Mach IV and Meshugga Beach Party
discs, the Langhorns "Mission Exotica", Speedball Jr.'s "Whiplash",
the the Kilaeuas' "Mundaka Calls" (did I vote too many times?)
If I had to bite the bullet and name only one "best of 2003", I
think that the Infrareds "Recorded on Microfilm" wins. [Disclaimer:
I haven't heard the Nebulas "Soft" 7" yet, so if we're including 7"
releases, I'll have to disqualify myself.]

Aaarghhh...I forgot about Meshugga Beach Party. One good reason to do this
"Best Of 2003" is to remind myself what really did come out this year.
Meshugga Beach Party was definitely a highlight of 2003 for me, and it
sounds like I need to hear the others you mention, Dick. I have heard of the
Langhorns, and they sound quite good from what I remember.
I do own the Kilaeuas "Mundaka Calls", but it really didn't do much for me,
and I tried hard, spinning it a dozen or so times. I agree with Ivan's
review he posted a while back, these guys remind me of The Bambi Molesters
the most because of the 2 guitar interplay. But they need more memorable
songs IMHO.

SWEEET! Brian, I thought you'd never ask!
I like the best of question because as Brian admitted, it nudges me towards
stuff I haven't gotten yet.
My faves for 2003 would be:
The Infrareds: Recorded on Microfilm.
-This album just destroys as far as a modern surf band killing it with
textbook trad-style.
The Hypnotic IV: Go Baby Go!
-Few bands can capture a live recording like the H-IV.
and...
that's it. As far as I'm concerned, 2003 was a pretty weak year for surf.
I'm gonna grab that Meshugga Beach Party, but other than that...I'm hoping
this annual question can spark some interest in something that made it past
my radar. Hoping Santa brings you all Jaguars and modded reverb tanks!

I just spotted this on the Bambi Molesters' site - does anyone know
anything about this?
(clipped from their site - go visit www.bambimolesters.com for more
details and cool stuff)
"DUMB LOUD HOLLOW TWANG - DELUXE"
RELEASE SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 2003.!
Long awaited, out-of-print album scheduled for release in December
by Dancing Bear. Some of the bonus tracks include The Bambi
Molesters' covers of Cecillia Ann, Margaya, Breeze & I and Restless.
Bonus DVD featuring documentary "The Bambi Molesters Backstage Pass"
and all their video clips added to this release. Exact release date
soon to be announced. Stay tuned.
*blink-blink* - bonus tracks? bonus DVD? have I been snoozing on
this one? Anyone have any idea when "scheduled for December 2003"
is? Could be a contender for Best o' 2003! (if you count re-
releases).

I haven't picked up too many surf CDs released in 2003, but far and
away my two favorites are:
Surf Coasters - Surf Attack
The Nebulas - Live at KFJC
I've been meaning to pick up The Infrareds' Recorded on Microfilm but
haven't been able to scrounge up the cash.

Hi again Dick,
That sounds like great news! Because that CD was out of print and hard to
find I did in fact settle for a CD-R of that one. But I'll gladly shell out
the cash for the reissue, not to mention the DVD! Awesome!

Hey Ferenc,

I'm hanging my head in shame now..
I have the Road Test CD; how do the songs that appear on both Eleki and Road
Test compare? Did you re-record them?
Thanks,
BN

Dick - thanks again for reminding me about the Lost Legends series. I forgot
about that. Dano, you were right about bringing this best of thing up. I'm
adding some more CD's to my shopping list.
I also greatly enjoyed the Hypnotic IV's "Go Baby Go!" this year.

TFJ (toofastjim) - 29 Nov 2003 20:22:59

Here's my 2% of a devalued US dollar....
Best of 2003 -
Infrareds - Recorded on Microfilm
followed closely by Hypnotic IV- Go Baby Go
Hnorable Mentions: Reef Rider - Beyond the Reef (came out in 2003, not sure how
much distribution it has here in the states, but some gritty trad-inspired surf
regardless)
The Kilaueas... Mundaka Calls (very good CD, but not quite "the" best of the
year)
Disclaimer: I do not yet own the newest Mach IV or Los Straitjackets CDs -
emphasis on "yet"
Opinion on BMs Dumb Loud Hollow Twang - I think that since there is additional
material not on the original pressing ) that it should be worthy of
consideration, if it is in fact released in 2003.

All of the songs on Eleki that appeared on Road Test were re-recorded. Road Test
was a stereo ambient recording. Eleki is a studio recording. Eleki is, in my
opinion, much better. Road Test was a demo.

I should probably also add that not only were the five cross over songs
re-recorded for Eleki, they include additional arrangement and
instrumentation. We had the Boston Pops come in to do some takes, but, in
all frankness, it totally sucked, so we threw them out of the studio. We
did keep all their Colt 45 tall boys though.

I've been reflecting on this question for awhile, in the manner of the
Ents, not wanting to be too hasty, but I vote for:
Bliss of a Madman, by Magic Box
Progressive, visionary, surprizing, unpredictable, brilliant.
I also liked the Morricone tribute, especially Dave Wronski's
contribution, and I also dug the Duo-Tones live electric recording.
