I have been playing surf for quite a while, and until recently,
considered myself a 'strat man". about 6 months ago i bought a MIJ
jazzmaster - on a whim - and discovered that it is just the ticket
for playing traditional sounding surf. From mellow songs dripping
with reverb, to fast double picking Dick Dale stuff, it just
sounds "right" Now, the strats sound " not right", not bad, just
not as "surfy". I dont know what it is, but they seam too bright,
or too harsh sounding. Is there a way to get a more mellow sound
more in line with the jazzmaster, or should I just except the
differences? different strings? I have been toying with changing a
tone pot to work on the bridge pickup to reduce the brightness. I
have several strats with a variety of pickups, from 57/62 reissues, to
Texas specials, to 54
Custom Shops, and they are all getting neglected because of the
Jazzmaster! Thanks! Chris
Hi Chris,
Ha, I got the oposite. I always considered myself a Jazzmaster guy, the
surfy sound, the nice glisando's, the reverb wetness...
But then I got a Jaguar...the less mellow more piercing surf
sound...marvelous....
Now I a kind of made up a strat using a cheap 2nd hand strat copy with a
marvelous maple neck, tossed out all of the crappy hardwear and replaced
it with various fender stuff and Gotoh tuners.
So there you have it...three guitars, which I all like...Hard to choose.
I use 0.11 d'Addaro flats on my Jazzmaster and the same but 0.12 on the
Jag. I got the Strat (copy) strung up with 0.09-0.46 Dean Markley Nickel
steel roundwounds.
I switch between all of them, but I use the MIJ stock Jag as my main axe
nowadays.
And as for a mellower strat sound, try to use the neck and bridge
together. (simple wire swap on the 5 way selector)
I did this with a MIM strat and it gotten a lot more mellower and more
Jazzmaster like surfy (but they still sound very different, but good to
my ears)

Thanks, jerry for the information - I have an CIJ jag as well, and
it sits in the middle between the strats and the jazzmaster sound-
wise - I may try a set of 12-52 pyramid roundwound pure nickel
strings on a strat and see what that does. I get together once a
week with some like minded Surf musicians here in Colorado, and
tonight we are playing. (we are getting darn good, and just about
ready to start playing out!) I am bringing the jag and one strat, so
we'll see what happens. I may just need to play them more and get
used to how they sound and play. The Jazzmaster is so easy to play,
I may have gotten spoiled.
