Boss Martians

Dick (flatwound01) - 15 Nov 2003 13:06:35

This may be marginally off-topic, but given the Boss Martian's surfy
origins, I hope nobody minds the post. I just got a copy of their
new release, "The Set-Up", and think it's pretty good. Evan Foster
is a *monster* guitar player, and many of the tracks feature Dusty
Watson (icing on the cake, IMO).
So, even though it's not surf, I'd encourage anyone who enjoys
killer guitar playing and kick-a$$ rock to check out this release -
it's a lot of fun, and will help you become a better rounded guitar
player ;) And if you haven't ever checked out the Boss Martians'
surf stuff, I encourage you to do that, too. Although I'm not too
crazy about the vocal numbers in their early days, the instro stuff
is pretty wild (and it's fun to see where Evan takes the band over
the years with each new release).

Is "The Set-Up" similar to their last album, "Making the Rounds?" I
didn't really dig that one too much, aside from "AMX" and "My Love
Ain't Free."
I guess I've never really been a huge fan of theirs--the
instrumentals on "13 Evil Tales" and "Move!" (aside from "The Last
Ride") didn't do much for me at all, and I agree with you 100% on
their old vocals. I really like "XKE," though.
Is their self-titled debut any good?

I had heard that Evan was going to release a "solo" album soon; this album
would feature more surf and Dusty Watson plays on it as well.
I too dig the Martian's early instro stuff. Evan's a fantastic guitar
player. Some of the songs are a bit repetitive, especially with the organ
holding down chords for a minute at a time, but its quite amazing stuff on
the whole.
I don't like the vocals very much either. Looking forward to that solo album
though!

Seems to me that Art @ Musick was gonna release that, as well as a
Phantom Frank (Treble Spankers) CD. Here's hopin'
Mike

Ha-ha. I could show you an email chain going back 2 years where Art B
insists the next Fathoms album is due out "any day now". Although he
eventually did make good on his promise for the Link Wray tribute. I'm
hoping too.

PS.
Does anyone remember the Fathom's website? It was really cool looking, very
professional. Too bad it, and the band, are gone.

I just got the Boss Martians, "Boss Martians" Dionysus release from
1994, btw I'm yet to get something from Dionysus I dislike.
Anyway, I'm sure most of the older guys have heard this. But man oh
man, I'm sure they are making more money doing what they are doing
now, but this album straddles that line where surf meets frat as
well as an Untamed Youth album. I'm guessing Evan was using his
Jaguar on this whole disk and he plays it well! Looks like it still
had both original pickups.
So if you haven't heard this CD yet I'd recommend it.

Older guys? Ouch, Bill! ;)
I really like most of the stuff that Evan did with the early Boss Martians -
I don't care for too many of the vocal cuts, but his playing is pretty
awesome, IMHO. If you like the S/T disc, check out "Move!" if you don't
already have it - that was released before "Making the Rounds" (where Evan
picks up the Les Paul), and, to me, almost sounds like a transitional
recording from the surf stuff to the more Marshall-y stuff the later Boss
Martians discs feature. Move! has a lot to offer, and some monster
playing - I really like that disc, even though it's drifting away from the
surf motif.
Good tunes, though . . .

and don't forget 13 Evil Tales (Dionysus) - as good or better than the S/T,
and The Jetaway Sounds of The Boss Martians. (Hillsdale); Invasion of the
Live Boss Martians (Vagrant) and Lockdown Party (Rockin' Bones) - all good
examples of the Martians in their surf/hotrod years.
