Buffalo Musicians' Flea Market

russty1107 - 10 Nov 2003 11:08:27

Yesterday I went to Buffalo's semi-annual Musician's Flea Market. I
saw a lot of junk but a few guitars caught my eye. There was a
Univox Mosrite copy in black, no price. A few of those new Italian
jobs that have vinyl covering and big plastic. They look like a
fancy cross between a low line Hagstrom and a high end Supro. If I
recall there were priced under $300 and they disappeared quickly.
There was a DiPinto Galaxy in red for $350. I wish I had time to
check it out. But the guitar that's bugging me is a Squire
Jazzmaster in awful big silver sparkle. Black pickguard, two
humbucking pickups and a huge headstock. What bummed me out was it
had a Strat style vibrato. I thought it might be a good guitar to
modify. What I want is a "Mel Waldorf" Jazzmaster w/3 P90s. I can
have this axe for $200. But my question is does it sound anything
like a Jazzmaster? I could check it out because it was too noisy.
Anybody have any experience with a Squire Jazzmaster?
Thanks
Russty

Russty - I think what you saw was a Squire *Jagmaster*; I don't
think Squire ever made a Jazzmaster copy.
Be aware that there are two different kinds of Jagmaster; the
original was part of the "Vista series" of Squires. The Vista series
was made in Japan and included the Jagmaster, the Super-Sonic, and
Courtney Love's Venus and 12-string Venus. The Jagmaster was so
popular that Fender reissued it recently, but these newer
Jagmaster's are made in China (?) and don't get the greatest
reviews. In fact, the Vista Jagmaster had the Jaguar's 24" scale,
but the Chinese version has a 25.5" scale (not much Jag left in that
Jagmaster).
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the silver sparkle/black
pickguard combination only shows up on the newer reissues...i.e.
what you saw was probably not a Vista series guitar.
Lot's of people like the Vista series Jagmaster, made during the
grunge craze. I have a Super-Sonic, and aside from the pickups, its
a pretty decent guitar. Lots of bang for the buck.

The guitar you saw is actually called a "Jagmaster."
The newer ones with the really ugly silver sparkle
finish are made in China. They don't really sound
anything like a Jazzmaster, but if you want a guitar
to mod, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Just look around
for one as cheap as possible and chop it up to your
liking. You might want to figure in the cost of the
p'ups, etc, because by the time you do all that it
might be more prudent just to shop around for an MIJ
Jazzmaster and add a p'up.
There is an older line of Japanese Jagmasters that
were part of the discontinued Squier Vista series.
These actually had reissue Jag/JM parts; a 24" Jag
neck and a JM body. Much nicer quality and finishes.
These are rarer and more expensive, but if you really
want a Jaguar/Jazzmaster vibe, you might want to shop
for one.

Russty,
I think it's a Jagmaster, not a Jazzmaster. I tried one once and it
doesn't sound anything like a Jazzmaster with those buckers. Maybe you
could swap those cheap pickups out and throw in some SD's that you
could split, or reverse phase them with a push pull switch or some mini
toggle switches. Other wise the guitar will sound like an SG or
something.
Whe you mentioned "Italian jobs" were you refering to Eko ? I have a
recent Eko SG what's good value for the money but it needed a change of
pickups to suit me. Cost me nearly nothing compared to a new Gibson.

Thank you all for your replies. I must not have looked at the
headstock carefully. I've decided to pass on the JagMaster. If it
don't sound like a Jazzmaster I'm not interested. I'll keep my eyes
open for a MIJ. The only problem I have with the Oriental models is
the are made out of Alder and I prefer Ash. Are any of the Oriental
re-issues made out of Ash?
Chris, the 'Itialian jobs' were not Ekos.
Thanks again,
Russty
