A simple question, really. . . .

Vince Frank (mournblade1066) - 05 Nov 2003 08:43:01

Man, this is such a lame question, I know, but as I've
said before, keyboards are my main instrument, and I'm relatively
new to surf guitar.
Anyway, what gage (is that spelled right?) of strings are best for
surf? I've always assumed heavy. Can someone let me know?
Thanks!
OH! And one other question: I've been thinking about getting
a new guitar--the one I have right now is a "Memphis" (a Fender
clone) which is pretty beat-up, on which most of the pick-ups are
no longer working. Anyway, I've been thinking about getting
an entry-level Fender (I think the "Squire" is the entry-level), because
lack of funds do not permit something more grandiose. Are Fender
Squires decent guitars???
Thanks!
Vince

Yes, if you search "strings" on this list you'll hear
all kinds of things, but the general consensus is
flatwounds, the heavier the better. Squiers are
pretty decent budget guitars. You might want to head
over to the Fender Forum
() and visit the
Squier forum to ask some of those guys about the
current Squiers available. I briefly owned a Squier
Stratocaster, but I think that mine was the most
"rock-bottom"; the body was smaller, it didn't hold
tune at all and the soldering and wire for the input
jack kept coming undone/breaking, etc. I'm also not
sure how a cheaper Squier would take very heavy
strings, you'll want to ask.

I have played several squire strats, one was an older one that i played in a
punk type alterna band, and another at my friends house, they were both
decent gutiars, and much better than the old yamaha that i have laying
around. But if you are on a budget i would recomend hitting up ebay for some
danelectro guitars, they are cheap on average, and you could probably swing
a good deal for one. And btw, what kind of keys do you play (style wise)
cause that could be cool in a surf band too, which is very apearent in the
tiki tones music.
good luck,
Ian

I've never played a Danelectro, although I really like Jerry Jones
guitars, which are based on the same classic concepts. They sound
great, and they are not hugely expensive. I've been wanting one of his
Electric Sitars for a long time. However, that said, If I was looking
for a good value on a guitar these days I would seriously consider one
of these Japanese Jags or JMs thats out there--sure the colors are a
little limited, but they're a pretty good deal and you can always
upgrade the hardware.
