Continental #9

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 03 Nov 2003 19:06:56

I bought a huge batch of CD's lately, some of which I hope to post reviews
of soon, but let me just say the one I keep coming back to is the Space
Themed CD Sampler from Double Crown Record's Continental Magazine #9. Except
for the 2 or 3 truly awful vocal tracks, the rest of the CD is EXCELLENT!
Plus its turned me on to some bands I had never heard of before that I'll be
researching further. Go get a copy while they last. I understand Sean is
almost out of them. Plus the magazine is full of CD reviews and great
interviews.
I haven't fully digested the CD yet, but in addition to the great tracks I
have already heard and love (Space Cossacks, Nebulas, Man or Astro-Man?),
there are really cool tracks by the Cave 4, The Royal Fingers, Aqua Vista,
and others I can't remember right now....bands that either I have never
heard of or that I am not very familiar with. This CD is a good way to get
exposed to lots of bands quickly. And you can't beat the price. $5.95 (US)
for the magazine AND the CD.

This is the only Continental sampler I have and I love
it. I keep meaning to get the others but money is
usually pretty short. Just how many of the mags/CD's
are still available? I'd kinda like to have them all.
In addition the one's Brian mentioned, I gotta add The
Krontjong Devils and 9th Wave to the mix. The Devils
are ALWAYS good.

Brian,
I'm tired and shooting from the hip here, but I believe that comp has The
Royal Fingers "Echo Rocket 66" or "Rocket Echo 66" or something to that
effect. I LOVE that song AND the production of it. They managed to get that
tune so HOT to tape without distortion or hiss. That one really packs a
punch, AND they managed to use an eighth-note tambourine run through
basically the whole tune. Love that one...now, I sleep.

I bought the Royal Fingers disc because of that complilation - I bought the
Krontjong Devils Sizzling Sampan EP anyway, but glad they had a cut in CD form
on the comp.

I second the sentiment that the Royal Fingers tune rocks. I just
picked up the "Japanese Groupsound!" CD from Spinout, and the Royal
Fingers tune "Three Hawks" is one of my faves on it. There are also
3 Jackie and the Cedrics instros (I've really got into this band
since hearing them do "Run Chicken Run" on the Link tribute), one
Mach Kung Fu tune, and several vocal bands (the 5,6,7,8s, the
Pebbles, the befores, and my faves...the Neatbeats). If you dig the
Merseybeat Sound, then pick this one up.

This has been out a while and is still in heavy rotation on my office CD
player. From their website, it look like you can still get #8 which has
another strong comp (with standout tracks by Pollo Del Mar and King
Kerosene). And you can't beat the price for a zine AND over an hour of good
music.

Hey Mart,
Thanks for taking note of "Crypto". We never released that song, I think it got
played live once... We recorded it just before our last drummer left the band
and it never made the transition to the Jeremy era. Thanks to Sean for putting
out the Continental!

Just want to point out that the link here is wrong, Spinout Music is Eddy
Angel's label:
Spinout Records appears to be a roots label based in Minnesota
