Danelectro "Spring King" reverb thing

Dave (daveharris_00uk) - 28 Oct 2003 18:09:34

I've heard a bit about this thing recently and was wondering if it's
any good. It almost sounds to good to be true, genuine old school
spring reverb in a funky little pedal.
Problem is my local music shop won't order one unless I'm going to
buy it and want me to pay a deposit up front. Instead they try to
force crappy digital units onto me.
If I could get some positive feedback on the unit then I might go for
it but if it sounds rubbish I won't bother.
Anyone know what it's like?

You can read the so-so reviews here:
I remember someone saying that they disconnected the spring and it still sounded
basically the same.
If your patient, you should be able to pick up a used tube reverb off ebay for

I've never tried one, but the general consensus
amongst connesieurs of the reverb is that while there
are a number of reasonable facsimilies, there is no
substitute. I had an ElectroHarmonix Holy Grail for a
while which was pretty good, then later a Premier
tank, which was the real thing. Every music store guy
will feed you a line to try and sell you whatever
digital pedal they have on hand. I'd try to make it
to a GC or some other emporium if it's possible to try
one out and see for yourself. I would imagine the
Spring King sounds better than your average digital
reverb unit.

Hi,
I tried both the Danelectro Sprig King and the Electro Harmonics Holy
Grail.
I like the latter most. The Holy Grail is very compact and comes with an
Adaptor, no batteries needed.
It has Spring/Hall and Flanger reverb. All sound good to my ears. I
tried one yesterday on a Pro tube Fender twin and the sound was quiet
amazing.
The Spring king is large, about twice the size of the Holy Grail. And it
doesn't come with an AC adaptor, which is a shame as it eats batteries
more quickly then you can say "Danelectro"....It has a spring in it and
when the pedal is kicked via the kick pad you get a spring crash sound,
nice little gem, but a laugh when compared to the real thing.
The spring sound is not bad, but not good either. I found the Holy Grail
to be a bit more defined.
There is also the "Little Lenai Sound Works" reverb pedal. This one
sounds really nice. Hard to find and a bit more expensive. The same
features as the Spring king, but without the silly kick pad and much
smaller. It gives you the opertunity to select the Dwell and mix ratio
as on the real thing.
Then also look for the Premier unit, a real tube spring reverb. I heard
many good things of it!
Ofcourse there is the Fender spring reverb unit. But I would ask Dano of
the Nebulas his opinion on the reissues.
My conclusion is that a Pedal is still far from the real thing. It
merely emulates the sound and it is digital.
My vote goes to the Holy Grail when compared to the Spring King, since
the size and ac adaptor thing and the more verstaile sound and the ease
of use.
Ofcourse this is just my humble opinion and everyone hears differently.
Kind regards,
Jerry S.

Hi,
I got a Little Lenai off ebay for about $175 including shipping. You
can get them direct from Sound Works. The last time I checked their
price was $195 + shipping. I asked them 'What if I don't like it?'
Their reply was return it for full refund.
I bought it because I got a old SF Bassman and I wanted reverb. I
think the reverb sounds really good. At least a good enough
substitute for live performance where nuance gets burried in the
sound pressure level. It's quite small, which is a big plus. You
can put in you gig bag instead of having something else to carry. It
came with a wall-wart and foot switch. On my Twin Reverb, I keep
the 'verb on all the time and figured I could put the Little Lenai on
top of the amp. The problem was that the spring was so sensitive
that the vibrations from the speakers made the sound go nuts. So, I
put it on my pedal board. But everytime I pressed a pedal or
accidentally kicked the pedal board, everyone thought I was
starting 'Wipe Out' only ten times over. Four letter words came out
of my mouth instead of the giggle. The floor was no better. I
refuse to give up, so my next plan is to make a base for it out of
bubble wrap and hope that works.
I hope this helps. I think it's worth a try.

Ive got one. It sounds pretty good, but it ain't no reverb unit. I just
use it at home and drag it along as a backup to gigs.
I had a Holy Grail for a while. It sounded OK except for the when I was
palm muting strings and it started to distort a little. I thought
something was wrong with it so I took it back and the one in the shop
did the same thing. I ended up getting the dano.
All the other reverb type pedals don't even come close to sounding
surfy at all. If you really want a pedal, and your local shop is
jerking you around, check the return policy at the mail order places
like musician friend.
But, if you really want to be surfy, be patient, save up, and buy a
reissue reverb. You'll be much happier.

Hey guys,
I'm new here. I dig surf guitar but don't know much about it so I
joined to enlighten myself. There are still a few vintage Traynor tube
reverbs that surface from time to time on Ebay. They're really good,
the old Traynor tube amps rock on a budget al well.
As for good verb, my 69 Bandmaster Reverb is the sweetest I've ever
heard, the tremolo is amazing too. Only thing about the tube rectified
BMR is that it breaks up a bit early to play clean loudly.
Peace
Chris

I always put my Fender re-issue tank off stage otherwise it'll crash
with the vibrations. This is especially a problem in some of the
larger clubs we play. If the stage is low/small enough I'll put it
on the floor next to the stage. If the stage is high/big, I'll try
to find something that isn't part of the stage (often the monitor
board works). I've seen pictures of reverbs hanging suspended from
chains.

I agree with Rick,
There is no substitute for the tank.
Rick,
Can you list the Halibuts releases, or point me to a site that lists
them?
Thanks,
Mike

I don't have the release dates in my head, but here's a list in order
1. Halibut Beach
2. Gnarly!
3. Live At Toes
4. Chumming
5. Life On The Bottom

Man, how long is your guitar chord? 3 miles? Wait, that's two cords,
in and out! Do you plug your guitar into the reverb unit and then
from the unit to your amp? Or are you wireless?
